This Russian Imperial Stout is a very smooth beer which is mainly developed around the cacao nibs. The nibs are mashed in together with the malt giving it the pronounced chocolate taste. An early version had 9.5% ABV and 43 IBU.

The 'impy' in this new brand, made at an old but restored brewery near the Dutch seaside, if I'm correctly informed. Thanks to Jan for sharing. Tightly cobweb-lacing, thick, frothy, creamy, stable head, off-beige in tinge, over a black beer with a chestnut brown hue that becomes visible under bright light. Aroma carries a lot of liquorice, next to hazelnut shells, bitter black coffee, haemoglobin-like iron, bitter chocolate, butterscotch, bayleaf, cloves, leather, burnt toast, 'Haagse hopjes', chicory roots, walnut, dried fig, dry earth, black tea. Sweetish onset, candied date-like hint, lightly soured by an elderberry- or blackcurrant juice-like aspect, bits of beef broth-like umami too, softly carbonated with a full and oily mouthfeel as is to be expected from the style. Very nutty maltiness, some toffeeish sweetishness first, quickly shifting to a deeply roasted coffee- and even somewhat charcoal-like bitterness, enhanced by a firm amount of leafy, rooty, spicy hop bitterness. The liquorice note returns in the end too, more so than the cocoa nibs that have effectively been used; some metallicness and an afterglow of slightly harsh, 'jenever'-like alcohol too. Very liquorice-like, too much so for my personal liking, and could be better with a tad less yeastiness too I think, but otherwise a rich, enjoyable and well-performing Dutch stout.

Bottle. Color: Black, light brown head. Taste: Dark roasted malt, coffee, spicy cacao (nibs), hints of licorice, bittery mouthfeel. Little bit harsh. Bit boozy. Above medium body, average carbonation. Very nice winter warmer. Needs a little more complexity to be a real top beer.

from Bier-Bienne - black beer under a solid dark beige foam left; nice lacework; aroma of chestnuts and mocha; fairly roasted, creamy palate; fairly sweet, low carbonation, umami; a late and solid bitterness; long aftertaste of mocha, vanilla and walnuts

Bottle 33cl. Black witth a creamy brown head. Aroma is full of roasted malt, chocolate and in general rich. Very rich taste with liquorice, coffee and some chocolate flavours accomplished by some hoppy tones in the finish. Great beer. I like it a lot

Bottle from Burg Bieren, batch 01 at 9.5%, BB 23-09-2018 bottled 2 yrs earlier, 33 cl sample. Opens with a huge tsssh, happily nothing gushes out. Dark brown color, huge rocky head. Aroma of roast and bready malts, bit coffee, some licorice spicyness, some dark fruit as well. Spicy in taste, licorice, some roasty bitterness and a bit caramel sweetness. I see ingredients show cacao nibs, which probably cause part of the spicy notes (instead of chcoolate) and the big amount of carbonation. Somewhere in between a quad and a RIS.
