COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Barmhartige Samaritaan is a highly hopped American Barley Wine. This Barley Wine combines the best of two worlds: a full warm tast (wich is common in English Barley Wine) mixed with loads of American hops (Simcoe and EXP431). A distinctive, high alcohol brew with a pleasant, slightly bitter aftertaste. Ingredients: Water, Barley malt, wheat malt, hops (Challenger, Simcoe, EXP431) and Yeast.

Bottled, from either BierNavigatie or HetBierMoment. Dark brown colored, small head. Beautiful fruity (grapefruit) and hoppy nose, almost like a DIPA, but with some additional licorice and malts. Flavor is a lot more malty, with the hop bitterness kicking in in the end. This is indeed combining the British and the American Barley Wine. Great experimenting.

Donkerbruin rood van kleur. Kraag blijft lang liggen. Ruikt citrushoppig, moutig. Smaak is fruitig, moutig, wat vaag citrus maar ook kersen en iets van marsepein. Apart.

Draught at Taphouse. Dark amber colour with a thin lightly tanned head. Sweet aroma with caramel malts, toasted notes, a vineous touch, fruits. Taste is sweet. Full body with an oily texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes slightly dry with caramel malts and a toasted note. Okay.

Draft. A brown beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of caramel sauce, plums, malt, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel sauce, alcohol, and malt, leading to a dry woody finish.

American style barleywine by Jopen, tasted from tap at Cause Beer Loves Food in Amsterdam. Lightly lacing, moussy, off-white, well-retaining head, very dark bronze colour with warm burgundy glow, lightly hazy. Enticing, strong and refined bouquet of candied figs, beef stock, black cherries, walnut oil, candied orange, sherry, blue grapes, toffee, stewed plums, horse meat, honey liqueur. Fig, candied banana and ripe cherry sweetness in the onset, bit praline-ish with a sourish touch, quite spritzy carbo initially but smooth, thick and vinous mouthfeel. Light meaty umami accents join the candied sweetness over a full, caramelly and mildly nutty malt body, leading to a warming, gently boozy finish with lots of sherry- and brandy-like, yet non-astringent alcohol penetrated by a peppery hop bitterish sting and surfing on top of gently flowing waves of sweet malts with a softly bitterish toasted edge. Exquisite sipping beer and likely the best Jopen I ever had - clearly this brewery, originally a mere beer company brewing at Van Steenberge in Belgium if I recall correctly, has managed to keep pace with the rapidly evolving international craft beer movement. Notably darker and less hop bitter than what I expect from an American barleywine, but at this level of quality, I will not bother with style issues too much.
