COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

J_man (1286) - Tustin, California, USA - JAN 24, 2024
UPDATED: JAN 24, 2024 12 oz. bottle labeled 'Winter 2023' from Total Wine in Tustin, CA. Both milk and dark chocolate in the aroma. Very opaque black body with just the slightest amount of dark brown/ruby color under a bright light. Topped with a foamy tan head that starts off milkshake-like and ends up quite small. The taste is again milk and dark chocolate with some cocoa, charred grain, and espresso coffee. There's a decent bitterness here which I'm guessing is both from dark roasted malt and hops, as well as the relatively light sweetness present here. This is not a dessert stout and is quite dry by imperial stout standards. Also, the body is quite thin for an imperial stout. The 10% ABV is *really* hidden somehow and I would have guessed it to be about 7-8% initially. It starts to show itself more about halfway through as it warms up, although it still seems lighter and therefore easy to drink (aka: dangerous in large quantities). Finishes with a bit of a bitter bite that lasts on the front (of all places) and sides of the tongue, and lots of dark chocolate and cocoa powder. This is a very good imperial stout that I'd like to get a couple of bottles to age next year and try again after a year or two. See you again in 2025 or so!

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2023 Pours black with a half inch of tan/brown foam. Aroma is roasted malt and dark chocolate. Taste is the same, roasted malt and dark chocolate, maybe a touch of coffee, and a slightly bitter finish. Alcohol is pretty well hidden although it comes in a bit at the end.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2022 12oz bottle. Somehow not rate until now, though this had to be among the first ten Imperial Stouts I ever had...25 years ago now. Roasty, chocolatey, viscous, creamy. Has some hops in the back, which pretty much all the new school stout world manages to forget. Really drinkable, and just a classic example of the style. Really glad I revisited this one, and will cellar a few for sure.
