COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed with the oyster shells from Sanriku Hirotawan, Iwate Kura Beer has revived the beer style that has been brewed for a long time in UK. Oyster shells is well fermented, which gives depth to black beer. It is thick, with excellent refreshing aftertaste.

Medium creamy lasting brown head. Nearly opaque black body goes dark red at edges. Roasty chocolate and caramel aroma with burnt earthy notes. Dry-sweet caramelly chocolate taste with roasty earthy notes. Mid-to-full body. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish roasty earthy aftertaste with salty chocolate notes. Nicely balanced and harmonic. Surprisingly dry. Nice. (0.35l draft at brewery.)

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2020 330 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown black with a finger of tan froth with poor retention. Aroma is typical for a stout, a whiff of lightly roasty malts, paired with smooth chocolate notes. Taste is very similar, chocolate dominating for most part in a rather oily and smooth medium bodied package with low carbonation. Didn't get any mineral, metallic, salt or much unami flavours promised from the oyster shells.

At a Japanese restaurant: pours black with a beige head. Aroma is light chocolate, minerals, roasty. Somewhat sweet. Low level of bitterness. Oyster shells shine through. Was quite solid and pleasant with my meal.

Headless pint in a craft beer store right under the JR station in Niigata. It’s not the first time I get headless pints in a craft beer store in Japan. Funny. But this is an excellent beer. Black, with dark brown edges, it looks oily and it would have a nice aroma of roasted malts if it hadn’t been served too cold. Sweet and bitter flavours of roasted malts and a salty character too. Full bodied, I love oyster stouts. I would have enjoyed more if I had tried this one before having had 7 shots of sake at the Cocolo store upstairs.

A very nice stout. Chocolate, but not too sweet. Dry dark bready molasses finish. Could be my imagination, but had a vague seawater sensation at the end. Tried at the 135 Tavern in Tokyo in 2017.

(En fût chez Popeye): Très suintant, sec, olives kalamata et une dose moyenne de grains rôtis. Ce que je m’attends d’une oyster stout.

Tap at Zojoji Temple in Tokyo. Roasted malts in nose. Hint of salt. Smooth texture. Medium bodied. Not bad.

Pours opaque chocolate brown with a thick, though not long-lasting, tan head. Aroma offers chocolate, roast malt, coffee, molasses, and subtle oyster tones. Flavor takes the oyster and chocolate up a notch for a bold and enjoyable stout. Mouthfeel features firm, thick body if not a lot of fizz. Worth 8.00 for 330 ml? Maybe a wee bit overpriced (How do you say that in Japanese? My dad would probably know.) but still enjoyable.

Bottle from Mollie Stone’s in Belmont, CA. Aroma is roasted malts, some resiny molasses notes. Taste is roasted malts, beefy malts, umami, dark chocolate in there. The salt character comes through in the beefy / umami tones. Tangy at the end but thins quickly.
