Olde Jack is a sweet, strong brew reminiscent of ales brewed for Belgian tastes. This Extra Strong Bitter is a smooth, all-malt brew with a bitter edge and finish.

From old tasting notes. Nice orange gold color. Small bubbles lead to a creamy tan head. Earthy sweet malt aroma. Sweet malty flavor is spicy with honeyish overtones. There is an underlying wordiness that flaws an otherwise good flavor. Light lingering malt finish and aftertaste.

For a strong ale I was surprised by the apple quality of this beer such was the tartness. Maybe they were aiming for a Canadian Marstons Podigree? at times it edged towards the sour which for me is the only possible way a bitterness could be detected. Not for me.

650ml bottle pours amber in color with a small white head which left some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is cereal grains and hops. Taste is malty sweet with a nice balance of hop bitterness to round things out. Medium body and ample carbonation. A very enjoyable sipping beer.

[1956-20090119] 341mL bottle. Fruity yeast aroma has really fresh apple and strawberry fruit. Hazy, dark orange brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. More grainy fruity yeast in the flavour. Medium body is a little rough. Average.

bouteille, à l’époque où j’ai bu cette bière elle titrait 7,2% alc/vol. aujourd’hui cette bière fait 5,9% est-ce la même, l’étiquette est la même en tout cas. je l’avais considéré comme moyenne.

Bottle found in Taylortucky Michigan, who would have thunk it: Poured a coppery hue with a long lasting frothy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of biscuity and bready malts, a bit cardboardy and oxidized, grassy hops, walnut and buttery. The flavor profile pretty much follows suit with a lot of mild sweet malt and a nutty background with just a hint of hops. Again, very much to the style of an olde ale but lacks the power and depth of the better examples. Still I found this quite surprisingly drinkable and perhaps the watery palate works here.

Sometimes you have a beer, one of those beers you pick up for kicks to mark as a quick notch on your bedpost... but you just let it sit in the back of the fridge completely forgetting about it until one day you are in dire straits for something new, somthing to quench your appetite in a way never before experienced. This one is one of those beers, and perhaps having had it rest a bit has given it a robustly smoky and sweet flavour I never wouold have expected. Like burnt whiskey on top of honey. Whoa! It’s part of the moosehead? Who would have thunkit?

Pour is deep reddish brown with a smallish tan head...also floaties...maybe skunked...smell is diacetyl...and sweet alcohol...taste is just lifeless butterscotch...blech...
