COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We recently changed this recipe to drop the smoked malt component to 5% from 8%, and like it even better than the last version. We think we’re back in real Schwarzbier territory now, especially after reading more about the dark beers of old Eastern Europe. The beer’s aroma is malty/espresso, with a hint of smoke. On the palate, malt, chocolate and espresso flavors take center stage, along with a hint of smoke. The sweet smokiness just offsets the more bitter/roasty notes, producing a smooth, rich brew. The hops provide balance, but virtually nothing to the aroma. This is the perfect beer to serve with a barbecued steak or tri-tip. It’s also excellent with just about any chocolate dessert! UPDATED: MAR 29, 2020 Keg at Bailey’s Taproom, Portland, OR on 21/07/2008. An absolutely excellent Schwarzbier. I wasn’t expecting the smokiness, but it blended so well in the flavour. One of the best Schwarzbiers I’ve ever had.

UPDATED: NOV 25, 2019 Poured from a 16 oz can dated October 15, 2019. Aroma is malt forward with toasted bread, crackers, caramel, toffee and nuts. Light floral esters and hop notes. Pours a dark brown with a medium sized, fairly thick, light tan head that recedes steadily to the edges where it lingers. Medium lacing and no legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with a lot of malt character. Lots of caramel, toasted bread and cracker notes with lighter notes of toffee and nuts. Light floral water and hop notes. Hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice beer. Great malt notes with a bit of some floral notes.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2019 Bottle at Mikkeller SF. Nose is dark chocolate, cream, light roasty coffee, cookies. Almost black with orange tints and a thick, low head. Lovely chocolate flavor, chewy, rich, not very sweet. Lightly roasted, creamy, a touch of vanilla. Lovely stuff.

16.9 oz bottle. Aroma is toasted marshmallow, dark bread, chocolate, caramel, nutty. Pours dark brown to black with amber highlights; has a one finger beige head with decent retention. Taste starts out lightly sweet and roasty before quickly turning dry and moderately bitter. Flavors of roasted grain, dark bread, dark chocolate, light smoke. Perfect mouthfeel. Impressive and tasty.

Medium brown. Not much head. There's some toasty malt with just a hint of sugar and a little touch of smoke. On the palate, it's fairly malty, just a little bit of bitterness. The malt sugars are nice, slightly toffeeish, and there's just enough dryness in the finish to round it out. I wouldn't say it's perfect, but they have clearly paid attention to the details here, and the end result is one of the best-balanced schwarzbiers I've had from an American brewery. Solid work.

Interesting by-play between the Just-restrained-enough roasted malts and the subtle hop finish. I really like the way this beer drinks. Delicious at moderately cold temp, even better as it warms. Confirms my belief that H-A is a true Oregon treasure.

Bomber from hayduke that we had together via facebook chat. A LOT of tan foam over a dark brown beer. Plenty of amber notes at the bottom of the glass. Some earth and grain in the aroma. Flavor is gentle. Ash, earth, grain, roast, and a little chocolate.

Shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Pours a very dark brown with a lingering beige head. Nose of chocolate, coffee, and ash. Medium body and a very smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is like the aroma, and the finish is bitter but not overly so. The roasted malts here are solid and yet the beer is mild and very easy drinking.
