Made with the most heavily peated malt in the world from the Bruichladdich distillery. Almost pitch black and opaque, small head. Furiously peated aroma, hiding the malt, licorice and dark chocolate somewhat. Very full bodied, thick mouthfeel, like fluid bread. Dark chocolate, loads of peat, lapsang souchong tea, chocolate cake, culminating in an almost endless aftertaste that also has licorice.
Alcohol varies by batch.

Mmmmmn. Boozey with heavy notes of molasses, licorice, chocolate... ah heck, read the description in the brewer up above. It delivers on all of its promises, as De Molen always does with their imp stouts. The smoke on this one is subtle, and the peat isnt, in a good way; it creeps in on the centuries-long aftertaste and lingers like a good scotch should, but with warm tones of chocolatey coffee. It isnt the *best* De Molen Imp Stout Ive had, but lets be clear: Every imp-stout De Molen releases has been excellent. Theyre world class, and if youre wondering why a brewery with such weirdly plain labelling commands such high prices by the bottle... one sip of this, or any of their stouts, will leave you with no further questions. Aroma: 7/10, surprisingly restrained off the tulip glass, but wonderfully opening in the mouth, with lovely notes of chocolate, coffee, strong molasses booziness, and tea. Appearance: 5/5, black pour with a thin brown head of lacing, yup, looks like a good imp stout! Taste: 9/10. Sweet, lightly chocolate-coffee, wonderful notes of malt, hints of plum. Not the most complex stout at first, but its really all about that long, wonderful aftertaste. Really, this is a beer you only have to sip once a minute or so. Palate: 5/5, oily, thick mouthfeel, with almost no astringency, and only the barest bit of carbonation on the tongue. Long finish lingers without ever being overpowering, just long, long sustained notes of malted coffees and chocolate and tea. (Theyre honestly not kidding about that lapsang souchong notes. Its there. Very pleasant.) Overall: 17/20. I think that De Molen has entirely hit the target they wanted to with this beer. Absolutely no flaws, and wonderfully balanced, just tremendously delicious from first sip to last. I expect nothing less from De Molen, and they have risen to my expectations once again. Well done!

2013 vintage from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow:
Strong stuff from De Molen here, this one was a very aggressive & almost overpowering imperial stout that was very malty, coming through with plenty of earthy flavours & a lot of peat. The dark malts show the show here with a little vanilla & sugar backing them up but everything end up being just a bit too strong for my liking & the balance wasnt the best either. It remained very much a drinkable beer that got better the longer it had to open up & develop but sadly I cant see it being one that Id go for again; perhaps if I enjoyed my whiskies a little more than Id have appreciated this one better.

Pours out dark brown & sits black in the glass with a medium brown head. Aromas of smoke, peak, and black pepper; very subtle sweetness on nose. Flavors are lead from front to back by the peaty smokiness, creating a savory smoked meat flavor. Chocolates, caramel, & licorice follow to keep it from getting too salty & bitter. Light-bodied with no carb; finishes dry from all that smoke. Its a damn delicious, unique stout, and TBH...I wasnt prepared for this one.
