IN THE PRESS
"Darwin and Rolling Hitch getting these awards is great news. The sheer size of the competition means only the very best beers get high on their listings."
-- Steven Proudfoot - Darwin Brewery Ltd.
"Some may find it interesting that no major brewing company made it into the top 100 list."
-- John Stith, WebProNews.com
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Austin, Texas USA -June 15, 2005
ateBeer.com announced the results of its sixth semi-annual craft beer competition Ratebeer Best today, Thursday June 16, 2005. The RateBeer.com website lists awards for the top beers and brewers by country, state, and world category as well as by beer style which is also in a world category. Awards went to brewers in every major brewing country, US state and Canadian province.
The award for World's Best Brewer went to AleSmith Brewing Co, of San Diego, California. Despite being a small brewery with limited distribution, AleSmith was recognized for several of the most highly regarded releases of the past year. The World's Best Beer award went to Westvleteren 12, made in very limited quantities by a revered brewing community of Trappist monks in Belgium.
• Beers from nine different countries were honored on the Top 100 Beers in the World list, including Poland, France, Denmark, Canada and Sweden in addition to beer titans such as the United States, Germany, England and Belgium.
• A relative beer wasteland ten years ago, the San Diego area is now home to three of the top ten brewers in the world.
• Three Belgian Trappist ales check into the top 25.
• This competition debuts winning artisanal brews Nrrebro Bryghus North Bridge Extreme from Copenhagen; Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock from Warren, Michigan; and Belgium's Pannepot.

ABOUT RATEBEER BEST
RateBeer Best was once again the world's largest beer competition -- over 30,000 different beers from over 4000 brewers in 120 different countries were eligible for awards. RateBeer's total archive includes over a half million beer ratings collected on its internet servers from tasters worldwide. An emphasis was placed on beer and brewer performance over the last 9 months for this events' judging.
Unlike other beer festival events, the judging was performed by thousands of mostly 25-35 year old beer enthusiasts from 65 countries around the world and with commercial samples - not special festival editions. Several of the world's most avid amateur beer enthusiasts participated in the contest including Per Samuelsson (Stockholm, Sweden), Josh Oakes (Vancouver, BC), Philippe Corbat (Switzerland), Jens Ungstrup (Copenhagen, Denmark), Duff Wallace (London, England) and Aaron Goldschmidt (Washington, D.C.). Each of these judges has over 3,000 documented tastings to his credit while the top taster has over 5,000. Because of their amateur status there were no minced words in the reviews -- beers were rated frankly and freely.
RateBeer congratulates all the brewers recognized for their tremendous achievements in the craft and art of brewing.
