3.2 La Gâtine Brune Bought in Montargis at the Leclerc Hypermarché. The most local beer there, I guess. First impression is somehow thin but decent, some roasted malt, a hint of bitter "houblon". Sweet aromas (from the honey/miel) and something exotic from the coriander. Interesting, well made and with character. Saturday, August 26, 2023

2.7 La Gâtine Brune Bottle - browny with tinge red. Thick frothy tan head. Ok fruity aroma. Bit fizzy in mouth, bit soft fruit tasting - no depth for a 6.8% beer. Tuesday, October 16, 2018

2.9 La Gâtine Ambrée Pours hazy amber with thin white head. Nose is sweet. Aromas are fruits, apple, spices, grass. Average carbonation, medium body. Medium fruity and sweet finish. Remind me of à mix between a bad Kwak and a cider. A bit weird, but quite drinkable! Friday, March 11, 2016

Sunday, August 10, 2014

3 La Gâtine Brune Bottle 33 cl. First of all, the cap on the bottle was terrible. My bottle opener went right through the top. The famous French quality I guess. Pours a large off-white head. Dark brown appearance with a lot of yeast floating around. Floral, hoppy aroma. Tastes a bit weird, it’s like a part of the taste is missing. Hints of malts, a lot of yeast, some fruits and hops. Pretty sweet. Long floral aftertaste. Watery texture. No carbonation. Wednesday, January 1, 2014

3.4 La Gâtine Brune Bottle @ Home Brown with small beige head. Not much aroma. Taste is woody, dry. Good company to a nice campfire. Saturday, September 29, 2012

3.5 La Gâtine Ambrée Bottle @ Home Cloudy amber beer with nice thick off-white head. aroma is mostly overripe fruit. Taste is a bit metallic at first (but this later dissappears), then some overripe fruit, red fruit and yeast. Would this have been a 10% beer, with a decent body, it would make a 4+beer. 3 La Gâtine Brune Bottle 33cl @ Bon Marché Paris. Brown beer with medium head. This brown beer has huge notes of licorice and cherry fruity with some oak flavor. The smoked part is low rather roasted, more fruity and yeast like. Not bad but too fruity for me. Tuesday, September 28, 2010

3.5 La Gâtine Brune Bottle from La Bon Marche, Paris. Very cloudy dark brown with a low head. Rich, malty, fruity aroma, chocolate, plums. Sweet, rich flavor, caramel with lots of chocolate and raisins, dried fruits. Slightly spicy, like cinnamon. A bit overly sweet, though tasty, clean, and with a rather dry, earthy finish. Very Belgian. Rather lightish dubbel. Very sweet indeed, though rich and tasty and somehow seems to balance out nicely. Tuesday, September 7, 2010

3.6 La Gâtine Ambrée Bottle from La Bon Marche, Paris. Very muddy, cloudy light brown with lace. Looks like fresh cider. Fruity, tangy, slightly citric aroma with a bit of caramel and earth, spices, stewed plums, and orange. Tangy, spicy, fruity flavor. Sweet with caramel, but balanced by a tangy edge and a nice earthy bitterness that gets quite strong at the finish. Spicy, yeasty, flavorful and satisfying. Tuesday, September 7, 2010

2.5 La Gâtine Blanche With some of these beers I like to "tease" the beer out of the bottle, by pouring it 10-30cm away from the glass.... and a good thing too, as it helped improve the head of this beer immeasurably! Plenty of head (when poured correctly), foggy yellow-orange colour. Aroma of fake witbier adjuncts and lemon and hops. Taste is a lot of lemon, slight wheat beer chemicals. Palate is watery. Another "also ran" in the Belgian witbier world. Saturday, September 4, 2010

2.7 La Gâtine Brune Light brown colour with plenty of head. Aroma of.... almost nothing. Some barley, but quite faint. Taste is a spicy mix of barley, malt, and alcohol. Drinkable to be sure, decent, but not worth going out of your way for. Saturday, September 4, 2010

2.6 La Gâtine Ambrée Modest amount of head, murky brown colour. Aroma of lemon and malts, sourness, swamp water. Taste is alcohol and malts with a sour and watery finish. Not what I want from an amber. Saturday, September 4, 2010

0.9 La Gâtine Blonde Here we go - the rating that puts this beer on the percentile list! Head is slow to form, but once it does, it’s quite solid. Body is a foggy light orange. Aroma is an odd mix of detergent and malt, artificial powder and other weird stuff that just doesn’t seem right, like someone dropped one of your grandfather’s breath mints into the brew. The taste isn’t as bad, but it’s a mix of malt and wheat adjuncts, the fake witbier chemicals that the big supermarkets use. Like, seriously? This sucks. Dudes, get yourself a microbrewery, don’t waste my time with the fake chemicals. Saturday, September 4, 2010

4 La Gâtine Blanche Bottle from a cheese store in Fontainebleau, France. Pours a beautiful and thick meunster yellow with an aroma of light lemon, citrus-sour yeast, and a touch of rose. Flavor is lemon Pledge-esque but isn’t offensive; nice, light lemon zest notes with a rounding out of lemon bread and a touch of coriander. Slick and light on the tongue. A great beer. 2.5 La Gâtine Ambrée Bottle 330ml. Murky medium amber orange color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, dusty, nutty - leather. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average duration. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. [20100410] Thursday, April 15, 2010

1.9 La Gâtine Ambrée Tasting at Papsø Cloudy light amber color. Moderate aroma, too much vegetables, suspicious, and light smoke and herbs. The flavor (it could be sweet and malty) is completely spoiled by an infection, that produces cabbage flavor and too high bitterness. Bad. Saturday, April 10, 2010

2.3 La Gâtine Ambrée Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of fiulijn. Pours a cloudy and completely opaque amber with a small white head. Aroma of fruit and massive phenols. Medium body, sweet fruit and caramel, some yeast but dominated by astringent and rather nasty phenols. 100410 Saturday, April 10, 2010

Thursday, April 1, 2010

3.7 La Gâtine Brune Pours a big, rocky, dense head that hangs tight atop a hazy bronze body. Rich aroma, if not an odd one; cereal wheat, brown sugar, fig, sherry, dried apricot and date; quite vinous and sharp. Lengthy body, plenty of weight fr strength, smooth creamy, near-velvet body, carbonation is quite low. Dark brown sugar and mollases on the body, cocoa malt follows, all rich and bold. Dark fruits fill in the gaps; plums, prunes, dates, figs, raisins, you name it. Bit of soothing alcohol warmth on the finish, quite smooth overall. Lovely Belgian-style dark ale that packs alot for 6.8%! Thursday, November 5, 2009

3.1 La Gâtine Ambrée 330ml bottle Bit of gusher upon opening! Pours a big off-white head that dies off atop a hazy honey-copper body body. Mild aroma; some caramel and honey, bit of clove spice and bread, with an underlying earthiness. Rich body, carbonation is suprisingly low, soft, drying texture. Caramel and wheat cereal malts on the body, hints of dried fruit on a dry finish. Similiar to the blond, more body, rich malt flavour. Thursday, November 5, 2009

3 La Gâtine Blonde Slightly hazy straw-gold body with fluffy white head. Aroma is REALLY wheaty/cereal-like upfront (Weetbix?), subtle spice and ripe fruit take a back seat. Reasonably low carbonation, drying texture, good full length. Wheat malt body, fair bit of clove-like phenolics, subtle citrus undertones. Dry finish, bit chalky, low bitterness. A decent blond, probably a bit uncharacterful and malt-driven for my liking. Thursday, November 5, 2009

3.3 La Gâtine Blanche 330ml bottle Hazy gold with a thick creamy head. Nice prominant bitter orange peel straightup on the nose, clove and coriander spice, pepper with sweet breadiness. Reasonably low carbonation, bit of creaminess and drying wheat quality. Sweet malts upfront; hay and cereal flavours lead onto orange and spice. Some ripe stonefruits make an appearance on a dry finish. A good witbier. Thursday, November 5, 2009
