Moutai Maotai Beer 11ºP
12-Jan-13 (500-ml bottle: Sample bottle from the distributor) This beer pours a crystal clear, pale-golden body with half an inch of snow-white head that settles to an unbroken sheet. Unfortunately, upon closer inspection, there are all sorts of tiny floaties ruining the clarity. Aromas of boiled corn, 1.5-oz cans of tomato paste, and wet paper are not at all enticing. Corn and cardboard in the flavor is pretty offensive as well. Light in body, medium in carbonation, kind of pasty and unrefreshing. Overall, pretty terrible stuff. I've put more than enough time into this adjunct-laden beer, so down the drain this goes.

Moutai Maotai Beer 11ºP
22 oz. glass bottle bought at New May Cheung Market in SF. Well chilled, it exploded more violently than any pressurized beverage I’ve ever opened, but here’s the weird part: No liquid, only gas came out and not all at once but in a whining protracted squall. Catching me full facial was the most acrid, stale rubber innertube smell I’ve ever encountered, like chewing a handful of rubber bands. Sniffing the neck filled my soul with dread. I’ll concede one hyphenate to describe it: Non-potable. Lord only knows what shenanigans are afoot here. Not gonna drink it, wouldn’t be prudent. Most WTF moment in all my vast dipsomania.

Green bottle and label. Decent Noble hop aroma---but really bland flavor. Thin body. Light straw color. Little head.

We are in the process of planning a trip to China, so I wanted to try a Chinese beer. I knew this would be gross, but was in the mood for sushi, too. I grabbed some sushi (I know, Japan) and this beer, and didn’t have high expectations. Very balanced, easy to drink, and a boring finish. It did get better as it heated up, and does pair nice with sushi. But I wouldn’t order this again. Unless, of course, I am drinking one IN China! 乾杯!(That means, "bottoms up!"

1pt, 1.5 fl oz green bottle (!just found the import sticker, that equals 518mls, also the abv listed on my bottle is 3.9%). Pale yellow pour with a white thin cap, some surprise lacing in the glass. Nose has mild sweet grains. Taste is grains, wet cardboard. Not much of a finish or aftertaste. Light body, light carbonation. Not much going on here at all. Bland and thin.

Bottle pours a clear pale golden with a large white head. Aroma of dirty earthy grains, malt, and hops. Taste is mildly sweet of corn and grains, clean but pretty flavorless after the initial sip. The fact that this has very little flavor helps this beer. Tastes like Communism, it’s there for a purpose but not to enjoy.

330ml bottle pours a pale straw color with a small white head that leaves a few specks of lacing on the glass. Aroma is mild cereal grains. Taste is a sharp undesirable grassy hop bitterness with some metallic notes and a bit of malty sweetness. No good at all. Almost not even worthy of being called a beer.

Bottle (in Xi’an). Clear very pale straw, no head. Faintly hoppy aroma. Thin body and fizzy. Not a lot of flavour: maybe some malt with a bit of sweetness and just possibly the slightest bitterness in the finish. Not worth drinking really, but not actually offensive.

Hop aroma with corn addon. Faint citrus notes. Quite right amount of carbonation for pale lager. Pale yellow color. If there wouldn’t be rice in this beer, it would be quite good for China.
