A Weekly Roundup of the Beer World’s News
Brewers/Industry December 10, 2004

Santa Rosa, CALIFORNIA -

Welcome to the first installment of Ratebeer News, a weekly roundup of the beer world’s comings and goings.

The big news this week was the release of the much-anticipated AleSmith Barrel-Aged Old Numbskull. The barley wine from the popular San Diego micro was brewed in 2002, racked to the barrel in 2003, and has spent much of 2004 in the bottle. Ratebeer members were front and centre at the release and it’s no wonder - four AleSmith brews currently sit in Ratebeer’s top 50 beers in the world, including the previous barrel-aged effort, Barrel-Aged Speedway.

There are other new brews coming up soon for the holiday season, including Ca’Canny, a winter ale from Scotland’s Kelburn micro; a spiced winter ale called God’s Wallop from Kent’s Westerham Brewery; Grand Cru Winter Reserve from Flying Fish Brewing in New Jersey; this year’s release of St. Arnold Winter Stout from Texas; and a special cask of Chocolate Porter from Ontario’s Church Key Brewing, which has vanilla added to the cask and is being poured at Toronto’s Volo, one of Canada’s up-and-coming beer bars.

The defunct band Phish has launched legal action against the Flying Fish Brewing Company of Cherry Hill, NJ relating to that brewery’s HopPhish IPA. The brewery will be changing the name of the beer before it makes its way to market in the new year.

Brandywine Brewing of Greenville, DE will be closing their doors on New Year’s Eve. Thankfully, Greenville will get a new brewery to take Brandywine’s place, in the form of Twin Lakes Brewery, which expects to come on line soon in the new year.

Le Sergent Recruteur in Montreal will be closing on December 23rd in preparation for their move to a new location across the street. The hope to re-open after about a month. Tony’s Brewhouse in Bangkok has been confirmed as closed.
