4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rated 3/29/13. 22 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a dark gold color with middling clarity. The head is an impressive looking four finger (via aggressive pour) offwhite shade. Retention here is quite strong, and as the head slowly recedes, plenty of lacing is left on the glass.
S: Big grapefruit here on the nose. A bit of malt sweetness breaks up all the hops, but ultimately, the pine, black pepper, and grapefruit qualities from the hops win out.
T: Similar to the aroma, the dominant flavor on the palate is grapefruit-derived hop flavors. I half-expected an upsurge of bitter, piny hop flavors on the back end, but no. The bitterness is really well restrained here, seemingly replaced with savory, nonintrusive caramel malts and bright citrus peel. Nonintrusive is the key word here - to me, an overt malt backbone can kill an IPA worse than excessive hop bitterness can, and this strikes a balance between the two aspects. As it warms up, the flavor really takes on a savory, herbal bend to it, especially on the finish.
M: The texture features good dryness, however it could be a bit lighter in my opinion. Still, I like the lack of palate wrecking bitterness here. I’d almost call it ’soft’ - but not quite.
O: What a pleasant surprise! I wasn’t really expecting too much here, but I’m honestly impressed with this offering. This is a great example of a ’balanced’ IPA.
On tap at Facebook in Menlo Park, CA. Aroma is dank, earthy citrus, moldy cotton candy, mild rubbery things. Taste is malty, earthy oranges. Slightly muddled and vegetal but overall some good dank, earthy citrus vibes. vulcanmeister (272) - La Grande, Oregon, USA - JUL 1, 2017
From bottle.Pours a hazy pleasant orange with a nice vigorous white gradually receding head. Aroma of pine and citrus with balance of malt. Flavor smooth and some bitterness but restrained and medium rich mouth feel. Finish with citrus and a good balance of sweet malt. Very pleasant and I’m not one normally to go for IPA’s. Could drink a few of these! maupie (1098) - Roosendaal, NETHERLANDS - JUN 29, 2017

Bottle. Pours an orangish amber with a decent head. Aroma of hops and malt. Taste of the same with some p9ine and citrus coming in as well. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and very tasty. ABUSEDGOAT (2756) - California, USA - JUN 6, 2017

Bottle rating. Nose of candied hops. A little diacetyl. A decent beer overall, but a little one dimensional. erickok (6037) - Leuven, BELGIUM - MAY 28, 2017
Prototypical West Coast ipa. Drinks well, medium bitter, very long bitter ending. Could be more fruity but I do enjoy it. (33cl bottle at a BBQ party in Berkeley) dwyerpg (6180) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - MAY 24, 2017
