Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had its own special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

UPDATED: DEC 1, 2008 Half-liter bottle. Definite herbal medicine smell when opened. As I pour, smell offers lots of ginger and some menthol. Hazy yellow with a few strings of bubbles and a head thats gone quickly. Taste brings in that ginger, but then I also catch the anise (licorice), caraway and bay. That was with the list of spices on the to guide me, of course, Im guessing that ’gentian’ is the source of the camphor note. In fact, its pretty good for my stuffy nose and sore throat thats kept me off beer the past few days. A nicer herbal brew than anything from Celestial Seasonings, for sure. hopscotch is right: if this beer were around more often, Id keep some handy.

Straw yellow, very light looking, clear. Sage like, lavender, kombucha type acidity. Ginger paste heavy, lemon grass. Slightly sweet finish for watery base. Bitterness is astringent, like mouth wash and black pepper. Different, more refreshing than anything.

Pale yellow pour, small but persistent white head. Nose is spice and yeast. Bitter. Middle is ginger up front, something floral, and rosemary. Finish is herbal. Unusual.

Pours pale yellow. Nose of spices, bay, sour. Tastes flowery, spicy, with berries, anise, and a complex spice profile. Not bitter, but still balanced and not overly sweet. Very light malt / wheat backbone. Somewhat medicinal.

500 ml bottle shared by Willrunforbeer, thanks for the share. Hazy gold color, nice flowery aroma. Lemons and spice.

Very floral nose with ginger and the bay leaves the brewer talks about on the label. Yep, rosemary as well. Very herbal. Massive dry texture and finishes with the array of spice toward the finish. Yes this is indeed a gruit that not many brewers do. Interesting.

16.9 oz bottle. Aroma is extremely floral, herbal--honeysuckle, basil, licorice, ginger are what Im smelling. Pours hazy pale yellow with a medium white head with decent retention. Taste is floral, herbal, lightly tart (lacto?), finishing very dry with quite a bit of un-hop-like bitterness that lingers. Mouthfeel is creamy, carbonation fine, body thin. Very interesting and tasty.
