Cask, gravity at Merton Winter Beer Festival, 17th & 18th February 2012 Dark brown with a touch of reddy glint and a small white head of dancing bubbles atop. Smokier than I was expecting with the smokiness in both mouth and on the nose. Dry, malty and the hops also showing, enjoyable stuff. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6
Cask at The Bell, Walthamstow 21.2.14. Juicy dark amber pour with a slight head. Lovely smokey smell which contains an earthy hop. Smoked barley taste that doesn’t linger for too long. A little bit cheesy - think those orange smoked cheese in a sausage shape you got as part of a five cheese pick ’n’ mix. Slightly disappointing palate - a little watery. Apparently deceptively strong - I still don’t actually believe it was 4.7abv. Nice for a pint, and a pleasant tipple, but my suspicion is you’d move on after one - it’s just not moreish enough. chriso (7533) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 23, 2014
Bottle shared at home in December 2011 as 1648 Smoked Ale. Dark brown with a reddish tinge. Chewy malts in the background. Prominent smoke upfront in aroma and flavour. Fairly subtle which, in this case, means well balanced. Smoke is more charcoal and campfire than bacon but it’s all good. Quite liked this and would happily go back for more. A bit more body in the mouthfeel wouldn’t have gone amiss though.

Bernsteinfarben im Glas, leicht rauchiger Geruch, der zur typischen Ale-Note hinzu kommt. Das Bier selber ist malzig Ale-typisch, ganz leicht rauchig. Sehr süffig, da recht wenig Kohlensäure. Nachgeschmack ist leicht rauchig, süßlich und malzig mit leichter Bitternote. --> 10/12/9/10
Cask at The Hope, Carshalton. It pours deep brown, with a thin off-white head. The nose is smoke, smoked ham, Bisto gravy, and starch. The taste is roasted malt, touch of smoke, charcoal and caramel, with a very dry finish. Thin body and soft carbonation. Cask. Deep rust brown with red hints. Slight off white head. Smoky nose. Tastes of charcoal, sweet raisins, bready. Full finish, but without much bitterness. Not bad.

Gravity cask at the Merton BF 2012. Dark red/ brown with an off white head. Smoke is very evident in the aroma and flavour. A little caramel and dry fresh UK hops in the finish. Dark brown, loose head. Very gentle smoke aroma, mellow. Smokiness also in the taste, and with a loverly full bready roast backing it up. Anna and I agree, the smoke is this is basically perfect. There are bigger ones, but they enter the realm of being big smokey beers, this remains wonderfully in the realm of mellow.
On cask at The Bow Bar. Pours a very dark brown colour with a ruby glow. A fair light tan head and smoky aroma with caramel and chocolate notes. Similar smoky flavour with roasty malt, a dry finish and lingering smoke. Mildly bitter. Very nicely done.
