Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of bluebetty. Pours thick and syrupy amber with a slight haze and a small off-white head. Very sweet caramel aroma, honeyish. Solid body, lowish carbonation, very sweet caramel, coconut?, Sherry notes and a whiff of wood. Warming alcohol finish with hardly any hops. Pleasant English-style Barley wine if somewhat to the sweet side. 140212 Stew41 (2021) - Phuket, THAILAND - JUL 17, 2011
Starts off very promising with some chocolate cookie sweetness on the nose; bang on target for the genre. A bit boozy on the nose and palate but the flavours really thin out as it travels through the mouth, dramatically so.Pongy fruity finish. Really needs a heap more stuffing but an ok start. Poured from 330ml bottle to large snifter glass. Lovely dark rich golden-amber colour but little to no head, the smallest lacing around the rim. Aroma is sweet and buttery. Taste is a big sweet hit of toffee, caramel, butter, tropical fruit and some spices. Despite the fairly big mix of characters, it is reasonably well balanced, but mouthfeel is too thick. Alcohol is big but not overpowering. Carbonation is medium-to-low, finish is sweet and quite heavy.
This beer was a Gold Medal winner the the Champion Trophy winner for Scotch Ale & Barley Wines at the 2011 Australian International Beer Awards. A confusing result in my mind, considering the competition and that this beer doesn’t seem to really fit either Scotch Ale or Barley wine styles. However, am keen to cellar a few bottles for some time and see how it ages.
