The story starts in 2010 when Dick Cantwell walked into our San Francisco pub. We’d heard about his little pumpkin fest and wanted to get together to brew a pumpkin beer like no other: a Belgian-style Tripel brewed with pumpkin, galangal and terragon. In a dark colored can.

Murky burnt orange pour from can. Spice, floral, apricot, plum, wheat aroma. Creamy medium body. A Belgian level of heat with funk, clove and spice tones. Soapy. Burnt malt finish. Flavorful.

Copper bodied, with a ring of head. Bready yeastyness in the bouquet that’s typical of a Tripel accompanied by a zesty mix of esters and pumpkin spices. Bready and yeasty pumpkin spice body. Yum.

On tap at SLL tasting. Poured a hazy golden orange with a small white head. The aroma is full of fruit and yeast with some spices tossed in. The taste is a nice blend of pumpkin, spices, yeast and malt. This is a very nice tripel.

Pours a hazy golden/orange with a nice white head. Spicy to the nose. Carbonation gives it a fizzy but pleasant quality. Spicy mouthfeel, just a hint of the pumpkin, not overpowering, which is good. Spicy then a bit of sweetness on the swallow. Lingers nicely. Not bad. Interesting take on a tripel.

On tap @ 21A San Leandro. Alright, pumpkin Tripel. Burnt orange colored beer with a soapy white head. There’s a good amount of ginger and spiciness to the beer. Kind of a fruity, cidery quality to it as well, which I’m not sure I like that much. Quite sweet...sort of a mulled cider feel to it, actually. Good bit of sugar, caramel, and pumpkin pie, too. Wasn’t the hugest fan.

Can pour into nonic pint glass from Epsom Circle Market, Epsom, NH. Aroma is pumpkin spice (nutmeg, cinnamon), yeasty sour (rotting apple?), mild fruity esters. Appearance is hazy orange-tinged gold with finger-width fizzy white head that dissipates quickly, fair sparkle trace lacing. Taste is moderately sweet fruity esters, cinnamon and mild alcohol early with more traditional pumpkin spice taste late. Palate is medium bodied with creamy/sticky texture, above average carbonation and long pumpkin finish. Overall, not my favorite tripel but among my favorite pumpkin beers. Fortunately (for me), sour notes in aroma don’t translate to the taste.
