COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep, mahogany color, rich malt candied, rock sugar flavors with sweet burnt currant and fig aromas. It’s strong alcohol content is tempered by a clean bitterness and complex flavors. This Barley Wine is named for Cornelius de Boom, the San Francisco Belgian Consulate General (1850 to 1851) and surprisingly the name of the alley along-side the 21st Amendment on 2nd Street.–

Way too low IBUs for this style. Alcohol is 9.1% by the way (verified tonight, in person). It wasn't bad, but locally, both Magnolia's and Anchor Steam's are far better.

American-style barleywine apparently named after Cornelius De Boom, a Belgian entrepreneur drawn to San Francisco during the Gold Rush, making it to Honorary Belgian Consul with a street named after him - just round the corner from 21st Amendment. From a smallish and narrow, 250 ml can at BeerTemple in Amsterdam; apparently the first craft beer filled in this volume, intended to translate the old small English barleywine bottle concept to the 21st-century ’craft beer can’ idea. Lightly lacing, egg-white, moussy, stable head over a hazy deep orangey amber coloured beer. Intense, very seductive aroma of biscuit, orange zest, dried mango, brown rum, honey liqueur, marmelade, parsley, pink grapefruit, bourbon, lychee, pine resin, mandarin. Intense, yet ’clean’ fruitiness in the onset, a basket filled to the brim with ripe mango, lychee, granadilla and tangerine, sweet and ’candied’ with a balancing sourishness around it, soft carbo, very vinous, very oily, thick mouthfeel. Very biscuity, bit caramelly and very lightly nutty malt body, thick, syrupy and rich with honeyish sugary sweetness on top but near the end dried by a very potent hop dosage, very resiny, piney, grapefruity and ’tropical fruity’, orange peel and exotic pepper bitterness, paired with a glow of bourbon-like, very warming yet non-astringent alcohol. Very intense beer even for this style, but utterly delicious and rich, potentially the best American-style barleywine I ever had, with strong IIPA-like tendencies like many other Californian interpretations of this style.

8 oz can from 4 pack. Served in a snifter. Very very thin head. Very little lacing. Beer is a dark honey color. Arom is some floral hops and honey. Taste os medium bitter lightly sweet. Lots of hops, more than expected in a barley wine. High alcohol is obvious bit not over abundant. Not as smooth as I had hoped for and not as sweet. Average to lighter carbonation and full bodied beer. Overall it is ok but not the best barleywine I have tried.

Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - cute, tiny 8.4 oz can. Pours a deep dark, sparkling copper with a thin off-white head. Aroma has some nutty accents, a hint of sweet bubble gum. Flavor is thick and full-bodied with some hints of citrus, some pomegranate-like fruity sweetness, a touch of dates and raisins, a brief hint of Christmas spices, just a touch of port-like booziness. Mouthfeel is rich and thick. Impressed.
