Tap at the brewery. Pours opaque black with a large, creamy brown head, long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt, dates and prunes, vanilla, lactose and earthy hops. Flavor is malt dominant with dark fruits, light hops and bitterness and a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation. pras (602) - Maryland, USA - MAR 30, 2014
I really enjoyed this, but I am surprised it is classified as an American Strong Ale. More of an imperial brown to me. Dark brown appearance, aromas of roasted malt, nuts, chocolate. Flavor was much the same. Alcohol was nicely hidden but you could still tell it was there. Hop bitterness rounded it out in the right proportion. Very enjoyable. Crystal clear caramel brown pour with an off-white head. Aroma is caramel, nutty, brown sugar almost. Good warm sweet smell. Flavor is caramel, slightly sweet, warm honeyed nutty flavor. This is a supper but good
Maybe just a touch light on the mouth feel but very good. Travlr (24691) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - AUG 15, 2012

4 oz pour on draft at 3 Stars. Clear dark brown with light tan head. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, brown sugar. Tastes of chocolate, nutty notes, caramel, light roasty and toasty notes, brown sugar, sweet syrup. Medium body with a dry finish. Somewhat creamy mouthfeel. alobar (3782) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 25, 2015
Dark chestnut brown pour with aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and pecans. Roasted malt flavor with dark chocolate, pecans, and toasted malt. Nice beer. floydslip (398) - Washington DC, USA - MAR 12, 2016
Growler from the brewery: deep brown beer with slight reddish hues and a medium frothy chocolate milk head. Nose of brown sugar, candied nuts, and roasted grain. Flavor is rich with toasted brown bread, scorched nuts, and bitter cocoa followed by a milk chocolate sweetness that finishes mildly bitter. Good beer with a lot of flavor. jefcon (1849) - Arlington, Virginia, USA - FEB 8, 2013
Draft. Nutty, chocolaty, and lightly piney on the nose. The palate settles into a nice, toffee-like and slightly herbal groove. On the whole, lighter than it looks. The alcohol is used to full effect; not a degree more than is necessary to carry the beer to completion. radagast83 (8059) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - MAR 17, 2013
Sample from the brewery. Poured a clear, dark brown color with a nice slightly off-white head to it. Aroma was sweet malts, nutty character and a touch of chocolate. Flavor was a nice rich caramel flavor with a decent amount of nuttiness and vanilla in it. Touches of chocolate and coffee around the edges finish this one off. Very refreshing and the alcohol is pretty well masked, though there’s a bit of warming on the finish which was fun.
