On tap at the Westside location. Pours a clear deep amber brown with a brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a strong red wine note backed by a strong dark red fruit note and some dark grains. Flavor has some red wine and red fruit but is balanced by dark grain and a hint of roast. Appearance: Pours out a black body with a fast growing, foamy, beige head with good staying power.
Smell: Bulky maltiness, with strong scents of semi-sweet chocolate, molasses, darkened malts (though not overly roasty). Flash of prune yields to the sweetish, fruity zinfandel notes.
Taste: Gently roasted maltiness soaked in prune juice and glazed in chocolate, molasses. Fairly sweet throughout. The zinfandel wine mingles with the malts and, on occasion, gives a hint of Dr. Pepper. Fruitiness dominating the back half. Well carbonated, sweetish finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-plus carbonation. The carbonation is crucial to keeping the beverage flowing, as were it to have nary a sud, the sweetness and heaviness of body would go from delightful to unpleasant (see: Lost Abbey).
Overall: A tasty tipple that was paired with a simple, easy-going cheese plate. kp (10882) - Woodstock, Georgia, USA - AUG 12, 2012
