HopDropandRoll (6) - - AUG 27, 2011 does not count
As their description mentions, this is definitely not their standard IPA with some roasted malts thrown in. And, honestly, I think it would be a better beer if it were.
I still enjoyed this beer, but I thought of it more as a hoppy Porter than a Black IPA. Plenty of bittering hops, a decent amount of flavor hops, but not much in the aroma department.
Overall, a nicely made beer, but not what I look for in an a Black IPA deyholla (11721) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - AUG 6, 2011
On tap at flying saucer Houston. Pour a clear deep brown with a khaki head that lasts throughout the beer and laces nicely. Aroma has a decent amount of roasted malt and pine hops. A bit clashing. Flavor begins with roasted malt and is joined by a bit of coffee and then pine in the finish. Sammer (1119) - Plano, Texas, USA - JUL 9, 2011
On tap at the one and only Holy Grail in Plano, TX. Black pour with an off white head. Taste is pine tar, roasted nuts and burnt wood. Decent. blutt59 (6565) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JUL 7, 2011
On tap, dark brown with thin foam ring, aroma is light roast and malt, flavor is watery roast and some hop bitterness, thin finish GuilTTy (733) - Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA - JUL 3, 2011
On tap at the Dog and Duck Pub in Austin, TX. Sk
Lightly hazy dark mahogany under a medium tall tan head. Roasty aroma with some citrus. Hoppy bitterness up front with mild pine and a little milk chocolate followed by fatly roasted malt, toffee and a hint of smoke. Slightly thin mouthfeel but not watery. Dry finish with a lingering hoppy bite. A solid Black IPA no world beater.
rougeau13 (3080) - Richmond, Texas, USA - JUN 29, 2011
Really dark brown with a moderate tan head that laces nicely. Mild aroma of cascade hops and roasted and chocolate malts. Taste is malty, roasted and slightly hopped. Body is medium. Essentially, they’re on the right track, but the hops are very weak in this beer. Extremely bland for the style, but still a very drinkable beer. AmEricanbrew (6878) - Same Trailer, Different Park, Louisiana, USA - JUN 1, 2011
Dark brown color/ tan head. Mild roasty, black malt, pine sap aromas. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Nice chocolate, light roast, dry black malt flavors with pine sap hoppage--good. thirdeye11 (6160) - Dallas, Texas, USA - MAY 30, 2011
(draught) Dark brown near black, thick creamy dark tan head
Nose of chocolate, light herbs, some pine and pineapple for good measure
Taste of bakers chocolate, grapefruit, and mild astringency
Medium thick body, creamy and a bitter citrus oil linger. mar (5423) - Dallas, Texas, USA - MAY 25, 2011
Tap at plano gingerman. Black with a khaki head. Nose is roasted malts, chocolate, fresh citrusy hops, and a nice fruity backdrop. Perfect on the palate, flavor is roasted malts upfront, big fresh fruity hops, and a toasty finish. SudsMcDuff (8438) - .....Manchester United.........., Texas, USA - APR 27, 2011
