COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rather than simply darken up our current IPA, we decided several months ago to design an entirely new beer from the ground up. The beer features our Organic 2-Row base malt accented by additions of Crystal 60 and Weyermann Carafa III malts. This last grain is a special type of de-husked roasted barley imported from Germany that lends a charred black color and notes of roasted coffee and chicory without any tannic bitterness that would normally be contributed by the husks. The hop additions are many and generous, featuring Apollo, Horizon, and Nugget, clocking the beer in at 70 IBU. Over 22 pounds of Nugget hops were added directly to the fermenter in our first ever batch. The sum of these parts is a befuddling, beautiful beer with an ABV of 7%. Big juicy hop flavors meld with rich roasted malts to create distinctively delicious ale. Hop bitterness is significantly more aggressive than our normal IPA, providing an interesting departure from the hop “niceness” that is our norm, all in all, something worth savoring, though perhaps not for the faint of heart.

Deep clear dark amber with a ivory foamy top with loads of lace. Dark earthy but semisweet nose that’s a bit leafy and mellow. Smooth floral hops on the flavor with mellow citrus and dark roasty semisweet malts, and smooth cocoa malt finishes. Pretty nice albeit mellow.

Dark brown pour, small head that leaves great lacing. Roasty, pine and citrus. Lovely balance. A nice black IPA - not too surprising given their track record.

Tried this on tap NITRO version at Opal Devines. Nice roasted malt notes, with the citrus hop notes poking through on both aroma and flavor departments. Mellow and well balanced, not a big fan of black IPA’s but this is a nice brew.

Clear black, small lacing foam. Chocolate, coffee aroma in taste and aroma, while also still bitter aftertaste. (Houston 201505)

Good ipa. Nutty nose a little sweet with woody bitter finish. Lingering grassy flavor

Had on tap at Jack Mac’s in Dallas. Aroma is roasty and some pine. Pours dark brown to black. Flavor is roasty with some pine, and is very balanced and smooth. Bitterness is not overwhelming and fits well with the roastiness. Not a big fan of the style, but this one worked well.

UPDATED: APR 2, 2014
Location: Draft at BRC, 4/1/14

Aroma: The nose is more roasty than hoppy, some caramel, and light pine notes
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a lighter brown head and some decent lace
Flavor: The flavor is medium sweet, with a good amount of roast, and a light hop bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, it has a clean, roasty mouthfeel, and a mild dryness
Overall Impression: I thought this example of a Black IPA was just a little bit light on the IPA part of the equation. Still, this is a nice beer.

Bottle - Roast malts and hops. Jet black with a rich white head. Roasty malts with a hop bitterness that dominates to the finish. Although not quite a marriage, it is a hand off from dark to IPA.

Nice for the style. Roasted and toasted malts with a piney bitterness for the aromas. Dark brown color that looks like coffee. Heavier than average palate but not filling. Good carbonation. Strong roasted, woody, coffee and char flavors with a strong bitterness that is slightly muted by the strong character of the malts. Another good one.

Tap. The look is dark brownish with a light tan head. The smell is roast, malts, dust, and cocoa. The taste is hops, citrus, roast, and ok.
