Almost black and creamy, this dark lager represents the 19th century black lagers popular in many central European towns such as Prague. Roasted malts give it a toasty, slightly toffes’ taste with vanilla aromas but surprisingly little sweetness while hops are subtle and only present in the aftertaste.

Roasted malty aroma with notes of herbs and caramel. Dark clear appearance with a fine brown head. Medium sweet- and bitterness. A bit watery texture in the start, then followed by more complexity. Overall refreshing and well brewed.

PowY (1224) - AUSTRIA - JAN 16, 2018
From tap at the brewpub. Clear, dark mahogany color with an off-white head. Aroma of mildly roasted malt - toffee, nuts. Light to medium body with a very light sweetness and a light bitterness. The flavor is similar to the aroma, light to medium malty with lightly roasted notes of nuts, toffee, toasted bread, some dried apples and hints of honey. Finishes dry and lightly bitter. Overall a light and balanced beer with nice roasty aromas.

Score: 7 / 4 / 7 / 3 / 14

Draught at the brewpub.
Dark red-brown body, with a big, frothy, lacing, beige head.
Aroma of dark bread, toast, cocoa, caramel, some coffee, some dark fruits.
Tastes quite similar, with more roast notes.
Medium, slick mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes medium roasty, a bit dry, subtly sweet, toasty, bready, a bit wooden, with cocoa, subtle coffee.

Really nice. Not too sweet, with a good amount of roast and toasty notes. Drinks easy, but aromatic. Pretty above average Dunkles for Austrian means.
