We always wanted to do something unique for our 8th batch but it came around so fast that we had to meet demand for our existing beers. So we decided to hold out until the 18th batch to produce a seasonal celebration of what 8 Wired has become over the last 18 months. Batch 18 is not for the faint of heart, nor the selfish. It’s a huge celebration of flavour that’s made to share and to savour. It’s the product of our wildest imagination, brewed by hand with one goal - to make the most regal of imperial stouts. Batch 18 uses an enormous amount of malt, hops and a delicious Indian raw sugar, Jaggery. We fermented it with two different yeast strains, infused it with locally roasted fair trade organic coffee, then aged it for three months in American oak barrels. We did this not just for the challenge or the journey, but to showcase our philosophy of creativity and quality. We didn’t just make it because we could, but because we had to, and it’s the perfect expression of our raison d’être, ingenuity in flavour.

500ml btl @ Galbraith’s, batch 18. Deep mahogany pour with a brief, short tan head leaving light, geographic lace. Nose of dark fruit, chocolate and ethanol - hinting at the serious drink you’re about to imbibe. Heavy body and moderate, fine carbonation. Chocolate, prunes, licorice, cherries and a mild woodiness that adds umami to the body. Some alcohol burn betrays the high ABV. Finish is sweet, tart, bitter and even more woody, yielding a lovely smootness. Reminds me of the Nogne Imperial Stout - outstanding!

As Batch 31 @ 11%. Opaque dark brown beer, good dark tan head. Palate is airy and fairly dry and has reasonable fine carbonation. Decent dark chocolate laden malts, bitterish, trace of woody bitterness. Mild vanilla and coffee. Some dark fruits, well buried. More rich dark chocolate on the finish. Quite drinkable, if it had been a tad sweeter it would have been great.

[8387-20160529] Bottle, 2011. Dark roasted plum dates and toasted burnt woody grains aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting creamy tan head. Richly roasted burnt woody toffee and caramel and Tootsie Roll flavour with a long-lasting roasted aftertaste. Full body is rich and complex and very smooth. Lovely, lovely stout. (9/4-/9/5/17) 4.4

2016-05-29. Black body, small tan head. 3+ Aroma has big dark malt character, sort of tangy fruity barrel character. Flavour is big, lightly tangy, barrel notes, lingering bourbon like character (but there isn’t any bourbon in it...) I assume it’s how my brain interprets the alcohol and the jaggery sugar and dark malt, light roasty malt. 7+ Average plus bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Alcohol is present but remarkably restrained considering the abv. I suspect I would have either liked this a bit more or a lot less when it was younger. 7/3-4/7/3/16-17 Vintage 2011 bottle at Goldings, Wellington, NZ.

DeliriumT (545) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - MAR 4, 2016
Pours like an oil slick... Thick, dark, delicious. Aroma of toffee, mocha, plums, rum, sherry and dates. Flavour is predominantly sweet and sour up front, cloyingly sweet in the middle and bitter at the back. Such a depth and complexity of flavours that keep coming and coming ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

9/11/12/12/10/11

Dodgrblu (756) - Sacramento, California, USA - DEC 25, 2015
16.9 ounce bottle, aged 5 years, barrel aroma, coffee bitterness, thin, disappearing head.

beer-yum (1950) - Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - SEP 28, 2015
Prominent licorice aroma in a jet black pour. Complex taste with hints of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and licorice/aniseed all made subtle by the barrel aging. An excellent brew that lives up to its reputation.

MacBoost (1957) - Victor, New York, USA - MAY 31, 2015
500ml bottle chugged in under a minute. Oaky, thick, roasty, barreled. Deep. Chewy. Nice.
