We believe HopWired is the first bottled version of a true new world India Pale Ale made with NZ grown base malt and 100% truly unique NZ hops. We bet you’ll find nothing else like it on the shelves. Although the malty sweetness is there, this beer is all about the hops. Unlike an American I.P.A. which will mainly hit you with a grapefruity-citrus flavour and aroma, the unique NZ hops used in HopWired are more like a tropical punchbowl: Passion fruit, lime, oranges and Sauvignon Blanc to name but a few. A local Marlborough winemaker said it smelled like gooseberries... Gooseberries? Who has ever smelled a gooseberry?? Decide for yourself or just enjoy it without further complications. Cheers!

GoufCustom (2173) - HONG KONG - FEB 18, 2017

330 ml bottle bought at Great Food Hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty.

Looks: Translucent orange amber colour with no yeast sediments; One-quarter finger head with soapy white foam which fades in 20 seconds; Excellent sticky lacing with zero carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant Ale malt with can be smelt a foot away, with fresh grapefruits, strong lemon peels, candied fruits, white grapes, dew melon, assorted tropical fruits, strong floral, light sugar, pine, spices, bread and strong grass. Very fruity!

Taste: Close to medium sweet strong Ale malt, with strong grapefruits, melon, light white grapes, passion fruits, light toffee, floral, molasses, strong spices, pine, strong dough, strong lime, strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Full body; Dry and slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Wholesome Ale maltyness in a very slick background, with a bit of light toffee. The NZ hops are in abundance, not just strong grapefruit, but testable melon, passion fruits and grapes. Wow! Flowery with medium sweetness. Fairly piney but very spicy. Doughty with strong lime to round. Just damn rich and tasty!

Hoppiness: Fresh grapefruits, strong lemon peels, candied fruits, white grapes, dew melon, tropical fruits, strong floral, pine, spices, strong grass. in nose. Strong grapefruits, melon, light white grapes, passion fruits, floral, strong spices, pine, strong lime and grass in taste; Bitterness is strong and grassy for a lasting, high astringent bitter-sweet malty finish.

After taste: Quite dry. Fruity spicy and nice strong bitter to mouth.

Comments: This is one of those rare IPAs where hops aroma and taste translate almost equally into aroma and taste. The NZ hops are so fragrant and mellow to the nose yet strong and expressive in every elements - lime, melon, grapes and passion fruits - for most IPAs you think these are mere bonuses to the obligatory grapefruit, but this one got them all and then some. The fruity and bitter hoppiness are blissful to the senses. I am running out of words already. Great stuff and this is a must buy!

P.S.: This got to be my wonderful No. 100 IPA ratings!

Medium aroma of malts, caramel, orange, mandarin, melon, bread, hops and citrus.

Hazy/turbid golden/amber beer with a slight/medium off-white head.

Starts medium sweet with malts, caramel, orange, mandarin and melon; ends slightly bitter and dry with bread, hops and citrus.

This beer is rather intense, complex and balanced. Rather soft flavours, but it still is really amazing. Great creamy palate thanks to all these malts. The aroma could have been stronger, but that is the only flaw it possesses.

This one’s a dangerously drinkable 7% IPA. The aroma has a bit of everything - grapefruit, lime, nougat, honey, resin and a little cherry. The big hops whack you in the mouth, spreading all over the tongue and right down your throat, but the malt is strong too, including a little burnt toast and caramel. You certainly notice the alcohol in the aftertaste, but not so much upfront. I got through that one a little too quickly, and now I’m pinned to the couch with nought to do but enjoy the memories.

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2017 Wonderfull IPA with a fresh and fruity taste, reminds me of the yeastie boys earl grey but much milder in taste and maybe more easygoing.

malushky (158) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 28, 2016
330 ml bottle from Theatre of Wine. Pours hazy light amber with a fine, lasting white head, lacing present. Hoppy aroma of grapefruit, ananas, peach and tangerines. Taste follows suit, it’s hoppy, fruity and bitter. High carbonation, medium bodied and long lasting, pleasant bitter finish. Great beer.

AtronSeige (1708) - Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA - NOV 25, 2016
Aroma: Initial strong grapefruit aroma, that fades to a medium aroma. Appearance: Clear, amber body. Medium-sized head, off-white, with a rocky consistency and fair retention. Flavour: Medium-high bitterness, balanced with a good malt backbone. Medium grapefruit flavour. Light bread, toasted. Dry finish with lingering grapefruit pith and bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Overall: Hop forward, bitter, but never overpowering. Good malt support. Great beer! 330 ml bottle, poured. 21A. American IPA
