COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If youre feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you dont already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, its a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Werckmeister (2557) - Vienna, AUSTRIA - FEB 8, 2017
0,33l bottle at home bought from Beer Republic. No BB date. black color, dark coffee-colored head. smells bitter chocolate, earthy, bit dusty, lightly sour, light vanilla, nice smell but not totally convincing. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes rather strong of ash, licorice, bit earthy, light vanilla, light peppers, coffee grounds, once it warms up more oats, some light pine and citric notes. finishes light to medium roasty bitter and dry with notes of ash, light chocolate and vanilla. overall good, but taste at first (when cold) was rather unbalanced towards ashy bitterness. after it warms up it gets a bit better, but still lacks some balance. overall rather decent beer though.

Bottle at home. Three years old. Pours a dark brown to black colour with a big compact light brown head. Aroma of roasted coffee beans, chocolate truffles, sweet licorice, roasted malt and some oak and alcohol. The flavour is more roasted with ash, heavy roasted malt, coffee, tobacco and dark chocolate in the background. Has soft and silky mouth feel, full-bodied and solid bitterness. A really tasteful and aromatic IS with a nice balance between roasted malt and sweet chocolate. Especially lots of chocolate in the aroma.

From tap at Mikkeller Bar Bangkok. Pours a pitch black with a small, tan head. Aroma has roast, licorice, slamiak, tobacco, slight smoke, pretty resisih hoppy as well. Taste is sweet, roasty, slight ashy and pretty bitter. Full body and a rather low carbonation. Oldschool!

2015 BJCP Category: 20C Imperial Stout

AROMA: Prominent sweetness with especially strong notes of caramel and chocolate. A general dark malt aroma but not particularly roasty. Black licorice is present. Fairly strong presence of citrusy/floral hops. Alcohol imparts slight whiskey note. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Opaque jet black with dark brown highlights. Large dark tan froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Very sweet throughout the entire first half. Chocolate and caramel flavors are quite prominent from the malts. There is a background note of black licorice. Notable bitterness at the apex with a slight citrus taste. Roasted malt emerges on the backend with slight burnt toast and unsweetened chocolate flavor. Aftertaste is a pleasant mix of confectionery syrup flavors and coffee. Alcohol is subtle but imparts slight whiskey sweetness; no obtuse booziness or smoke. 19/20

MOUTHFEEL: Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Texture is soft and smooth; almost velvety. Alcohol is subdued and deceptive; but beer does not taste or feel syrupy. Aftertaste is bittersweet; akin to peanut brittle. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A delicious, wonderfully drinkable World Class imperial stout. Almost perfection. 10/10

TOTAL SCORE: 50/50

Big, bitter, roasty, coffee, chocolate... this is a hefty impy, and definitely a slow sipper.

Owl Farm, Brooklyn tap: pours black with a small brownish head. Aroma is thick chocolate, booze, molasses, and malts. Definitely on the sweet and roasty side of stouts rather than the bitter side of ISs. Pretty thick bodied. Plenty of complexity.
