Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

2015 BJCP Category: 20C Imperial Stout

AROMA: Prominent sweetness with especially strong notes of caramel and chocolate. A general dark malt aroma but not particularly roasty. Black licorice is present. Fairly strong presence of citrusy/floral hops. Alcohol imparts slight whiskey note. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Opaque jet black with dark brown highlights. Large dark tan froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Very sweet throughout the entire first half. Chocolate and caramel flavors are quite prominent from the malts. There is a background note of black licorice. Notable bitterness at the apex with a slight citrus taste. Roasted malt emerges on the backend with slight burnt toast and unsweetened chocolate flavor. Aftertaste is a pleasant mix of confectionery syrup flavors and coffee. Alcohol is subtle but imparts slight whiskey sweetness; no obtuse booziness or smoke. 19/20

MOUTHFEEL: Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Texture is soft and smooth; almost velvety. Alcohol is subdued and deceptive; but beer does not taste or feel syrupy. Aftertaste is bittersweet; akin to peanut brittle. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A delicious, wonderfully drinkable World Class imperial stout. Almost perfection. 10/10

A big, roasty imperial stout. Starts with molasses, smoke, woody flavors. A strong but sweet finish.

likeatrainwreck (573) - Stockport, Cheshire, ENGLAND - DEC 18, 2016
Big, bitter, roasty, coffee, chocolate... this is a hefty impy, and definitely a slow sipper.

mansquito (6427) - Nueva York, New York, USA - DEC 17, 2016
Owl Farm, Brooklyn tap: pours black with a small brownish head. Aroma is thick chocolate, booze, molasses, and malts. Definitely on the sweet and roasty side of stouts rather than the bitter side of ISs. Pretty thick bodied. Plenty of complexity.

Draught @ Mikkeller Bangkok. Inky black with large spongy tan head, sweet mocha aroma, medium carbonation, bitter chocolate-mocha taste followed by hoppy bitterness, thick body, long hoppy finish. Wow! Incredibly well balanced brew for a 10 plus percent ABV.
