COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
My idea of a strong ale was brewed with loads of malt, hops, jaggery and a touch of manuka smoke.
It was fermented with a clean ale yeast to let the ingredients speak for themselves without getting interrupted by too many esters.
After all that it was aged for 5 months on American oak, then refermented in the bottle.
Cheers – Søren Eriksen – Brewer
Hops - Pacific Jade, Chinook
Malt - Pale Ale, Munich, Special B
Yeast - US-05
Other - Manuka Smoke, Jaggery (raw sugar) and American Oak
IBU - 75
SRM - 15

olio (10272) - Tampere, FINLAND - FEB 12, 2014
33 cl bottle
Dark mahogany color, small head. Sweet smoky taste, caramel malts and faint hops, sweet ripe fruits and sugar also. Sweet caramel flavor with oak, toffee, some ripe fruits with brown sugar and mild booze at the end. Very sweet sticky palate, mild alcohol burn. A slow sipper. Very nice.

lusikka (7813) - Tampere, FINLAND - FEB 12, 2014
330 ml bottle.
Pours a dark amber colour with a small head. Aroma of caramel, wooden notes, mild vanilla notes and biscuit. Rich flavour of caramel, some mint, wood, vanilla, biscuit, floral bitterness and berries. Mild smoked notes as well. Full bodied and oily mouthfeel. Heavy.

KyotoLefty (10264) - Kyoto, JAPAN - FEB 9, 2014
Bottle from Yamaichi. Pretty red-orange with lace. Winy, smoky, caramel, gum ball nose. Sweet, very smoky, sugars, rum, booze, very bitter, vanilla and caramel. Fun. Sweet but balanced by smoke, booze, hops. Very flavorful, could probably be better in a year. A bit too boozy.

dfearnley (2143) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - FEB 8, 2014
Bottle to IPA glass. Aroma of brown sugar, grapefruit, oak, and pine. Cloudy amber with a creamy off white head but a bunch of particulates. Taste is heavy pine from beginning to end, with some sugar and a smoky bitter finish. The first taste was a bit overwhelming, but it’s getting better as I drink it. Maybe, that’s the 11% talking.

Yorker (2006) - Herning, DENMARK - FEB 3, 2014
33 cl bottle @ home. Pours dark amber with an off-white head that leaves quite a bit of lacing. Aroma and flavour are toffee, candy sugar, dried fruit, oak, and hops - with a bitter finish.

Marduk (7694) - Reval, ESTONIA - JAN 28, 2014
330ml bottle. Clear ruby red color. Alcohol, malty, caramel, sweetish notes in aroma. Roast, malty, hazelnuts, mild coffee in taste. Coffee in aftertaste. It’s bit raw, but still very drinkable.

330ml bottle (ALEhouse, Riga)
Lovely soft malty caramel, barleywine-like. Toffee. Coppery amber, hard to pull a head. And whilst the aroma is very nice, like the bumaye, the taste is even better. Really puts a smile on your face and gives you a feeling of well-being. Totally gorgeous caramel taste, barley-winey again, but with a massive bitter bite, and a great burnt bitterness in the corner too. On swallowing, the caramel barley-wine toffee again takes the driving seat, just a tiny ashy burnt corner. I’m not gonna say that it’s not a strong beer, but that 11% is so much part of the mellowness, it’s perfectly in place. Beautifully aged. Such a good sipper. These guys rock!

MunBro (942) - St. Albert, Alberta, CANADA - JAN 12, 2014
Drinking straight from the bottle (is that faux pas?) Aroma is smokey oak and alcohol. Tastes wonderfully smokey and malty with some hop flavor in there too. Incredibly rich, complex flavor.

allmyvinyl (10613) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 10, 2014
Bottle at Craig’s. Pours clear brown, no head. Didn’t know what to expect from this, so the smoke was a surprise! Nice woody aromas too. Stone fruit in the background. Taste brings it all together very nicely, with some vanilla and sherry. Lovely.

Bottle @tasting. Pours brown, malty sweetness to the nose with some smoke there as well. Fruity on the tongue but with a big smoke flavour, you also get a big alcohol hit, you know this one is 11%. Also right at the end you get this yeasty bread flavour.
