”Poor old misunderstood brown ale... This is perhaps the most versatile style of beer in the world, yet it is often frowned upon, but why? Is it because the word BROWN doesn’t cling right, perhaps it leads the mind towards less appetizing things? Is it because the colour BROWN is less snazzy than, say ’golden’?? Or is it because the duopoly of NZ brewing have driven the BROWN style into oblivion by claiming the style for their most unattractive products??? We’ll let you think about that while you sip this beer, either in the sun on the beach or in front of the barbie, with your afternoon steak and cheese pie, with your Sunday roast or just by itself because you are thirsty and deserve a treat! Chances are this is unlike any Brown Ale you have ever tasted, it is malty, hoppy and flavourful. Some might say it is Brown Ale re-defined, we’d say it’s REWIRED. Light brown with hints of red and a nice beige foam that quickly dissipates (but leaves a lace all the way). Aroma mostly sweet, biscuity, with light hints of caramel and chocolate. Some hop aromas nicely balanced. Light body, low carbonation . Taste is malty sweet, a little sourness, with a cofee-bitter dry finish. Feel no alcohol. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the brewery. Pours dark brown. Biscuit, orange, little peach, touch of toffee. Nice brown.

Disclosure: aged for 4+ years. given the style, prob should not have done it but got left behind. all things considered, its drinkable as the signs of aging although there are not overwhelming. pours a simple brown with thin off-white head that quickly disappears. mostly clear but does have some hazyness (prob from yeast deposits). minimal lacing. body is quite thin as is its texture. carbonation is a bit light. not much in terms of astringency. flavor is a muted combination of sweet and roasty malts, with a hint of chocolate. some oxidation shows up and there’s a bothersome harshness that lingers in the aftertaste. as you would expect, finishes with muted sweetness. --- to many this would be a drinkable beer still... score is a combination of what I experienced with this half liter bottle and what I remember the fresh Rewired to taste like.

Strong amber colour with redish head. Far more crisp than I was expecting for this style with a slight hop profile.

Bottle (1 pint 0.9 oz). Pours dark brown with reddish hue and tan head. Brown sugar and pepper and spice in the nose. Bread crust and brown sugar upfront with a hint of coffee. Shared 16.9 oz. bottle. Clear dark amber with a beige head. Aroma is malt, tea, alcohol, sweet. Taste: malt, bread, tea, rust, spice, some oxidation possible. might be a little stale.

Aroma: sweet and malty, going in direction of apple juice; bottle possibly old; Appearance: very dark ruby red with offwhite head that dissipates slowly; Taste: follows nose with overly sweet malt and apple notes; not good; Palate: medium-heavy body with long, sweet finish; Overall: may not be judging fairly due to unknown age of bottle, but definitely not impressive.

Good clear brown-copper body with decent beige head. Aroma of wet farts, chaps, and Dapper Dan Man hair grease. Flavour is burnt wood, roasted oak, smelly leather shoes. Brown is a good way to describe it. Rather earthy, pretty good, but also not the tastiest in this category in my humble opinion.

Bottle into pint glass. Pours a dark brown colour with tan head. Aroma is slightly chocolatey. Taste is chocolate and roasted malt notes with a pleasing bitterness.

This was poured into a becher pint glass. The appearance was a dark brown color with a thin concave off white little head that dissipated at a nice pace. Lacing was mildly sticking here and there, looked good for the most part. The smell started off with a ton of rich deep sticky dark fruits roaming into a subtle dry cocoa and slight coffee bean eloquence. Dry woody and subtle vanilla graces the underneath. The taste was a nice dry sweet dark fruity stickiness sliding into subtle roasty cocoa and dry coffee. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs really light. The sweet dark fruity stickiness wants to cling to my tongue but isn’t exactly too overbearing, not cloying. Overall, leaning to the English side of the wheelhouse of a brown ale, I’d say this works, it shows all of the characteristics of the style and I’d have it again.
