Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isnt as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (its true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the towns brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). Weve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isnt limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isnt as crazy as it sounds.

CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - MAY 13, 2011
Bottle: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing off-white head. Has a nice smoky nose complex nose with some woodiness and dark chocolate. Starts with average fullness and a mild roasty sweetness with some good authentic smoke flavor and roasted maltiness before a drier and thinner finish. Could use a little more body, but still a smooth and very drinkable smoked porter that pairs well with food.

(bottle) Pitch-black coloured hue with a beige medium-sized foamy and stable head. Roast-malty and slightly leathery and subtle fruity aroma with notes of chocolate, vanilla and shy traces of smoke. Bitter-sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderately roasty malty taste with leather, chocolate, a subtle fruity touch and shades of smoke malt towards the bitter and slightly sweet finish including a lasting aftertaste of chocolate and vanilla. Pleasant but a tad thin. 11.V.11

0.5 l bottle, thanks Timo A! Almost opaque dark reddish brown color. Sweet aroma of licorice and dark bread. The flavors of coffee, licorice and phenolic smoke. Dominated by coffee and licorice, I find this unbalanced.

Bottle. Dark brown pour, slightly red, with biege head. Smoke, lightly salted meat, roasted malt, light chocolate, and somewhat earthy. A decent smoked beer, worth trying, but not exceptional.

50 cl bottle from De Bierkoning. Very dark redbrown color. Beige head, some lacing. Aromas of smoke, roasted malt, cocoa. Flavor is somewhat (not overly) sweet, with more smoke and a hint of bitterness. Medium bodied, velvet mouthfeel. Finishes with roast & bitter. Very decent.

Strykzone (7254) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - APR 30, 2011
Very dark with mahogany highlights and a small tan head that quickly fades. A nose that is smoky and roasty could be more pronounced. Smoke is also the first thing tasted. Dark fruit follows with grapes. Cocoa is noted and is light and pleasant. Bittering hops add some tongue tingle and it would not hurt if they were upped some. This is a tasty beer. With some smoked beers the smoke is over done and becomes a drawback. That is not the case here and the smoke is nicely understated.
