Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Black with just a vague hint of rose and no head at all. I suppose I didn’t buy it for the way it looks. You may almost buy it for the smell rough sawn totara chips that have been thrown on a fire and left to smoulder. It’s that detailed. There’s also collosal plummy charry notes. Very nice indeed. The beer is filling when it hits the mouth, silky dark chocolate that spreads and dries on the tongue. I was expecting burnt astringency but I didn’t get it, and I’m quite pleased. This is good. Seriously good. Big like.

Very dark, with a small head that doesn’t last long. As the name says, it’s a kinda roasty, smoked, dark beer. Usually not my favorite style, this one scored pretty high though.

Pour is jet black with a thick light tan head. Big carbonation bubbles and decent lacing throughout the tasting. Aroma is of smoke, coffee, and just a touch of sweetness. Flavor is quite mellow for a smoked stout and the body is a tad thin, but even so it is very drinkable and the mouth-feel is great. Its like they put smoked malts in a dry Irish stout.

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours black with a beige head that didn’t last. Light bacon smoke aroma. Flavor is relatively light - smoke - but something of non-bitter hop as well. I can imagine chocolate in this. Very nice flavor.

marcus (10573) - Sacramento, California, USA - JUN 6, 2011
Bottle from Star Grocery, Berkeley. Pours black with a disappearing tan head and a smoky treacle aroma. There is a hearty smoked malt flafvor with a slight hop bitterness.

Plovmand (8586) - Grindsted, DENMARK - MAY 22, 2011
Bottle. Pours pitch black with a big fluffy tan head. The aroma is light roasted, dark fruity with notes of light bacon and caramel. The flavour is hard roasted malt, liquorice, smoke, bacon and light caramel.

CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - MAY 13, 2011
Bottle: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing off-white head. Has a nice smoky nose complex nose with some woodiness and dark chocolate. Starts with average fullness and a mild roasty sweetness with some good authentic smoke flavor and roasted maltiness before a drier and thinner finish. Could use a little more body, but still a smooth and very drinkable smoked porter that pairs well with food.

MoritzF (10068) - Ottobrunn, GERMANY - MAY 12, 2011
(bottle) Pitch-black coloured hue with a beige medium-sized foamy and stable head. Roast-malty and slightly leathery and subtle fruity aroma with notes of chocolate, vanilla and shy traces of smoke. Bitter-sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderately roasty malty taste with leather, chocolate, a subtle fruity touch and shades of smoke malt towards the bitter and slightly sweet finish including a lasting aftertaste of chocolate and vanilla. Pleasant but a tad thin. 11.V.11

Miksu (5053) - Jyväskylä, FINLAND - MAY 11, 2011
0.5 l bottle, thanks Timo A! Almost opaque dark reddish brown color. Sweet aroma of licorice and dark bread. The flavors of coffee, licorice and phenolic smoke. Dominated by coffee and licorice, I find this unbalanced.

3.4
JohnnyJ (5569) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 9, 2011
Bottle. Dark brown pour, slightly red, with biege head. Smoke, lightly salted meat, roasted malt, light chocolate, and somewhat earthy. A decent smoked beer, worth trying, but not exceptional.
