Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isnt as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (its true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the towns brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). Weve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isnt limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isnt as crazy as it sounds.

Very dark brown color, almost black with a light tan head, good retention and nice lacework. Aroma is roasty with light smoky notes. In the mouth the smokiness has more presence, good maltiness, roasted notes as well with chocolate hints. Roasty final with dry mouthfeel.

Slight/medium aroma of malts, caramel, dark fruit, liquorice, chocolate, roasted malts and smoke.

Opaque black beer with a slight/medium beige head.

Starts medium sweet with malts, caramel, dark fruit, liquorice and chocolate; ends slightly bitter and dry with roasted malts and smoke.

This beer is rather intense, complex and balanced. The smoke is really dominant at first in both the aroma and flavour. Once this settles downs however, the aroma lacks intensity. Great flavour and palate and an amazing appearance though.

Bottle from the Blue Moon, Cambridge. Dark brown and impenetrable with a khaki head. Chocolate fudge sundae with notes of milky coffee. Getting surprisingly little smoke but there is some nice hoppy floral scent. The milky sweetness is interwoven with a sharp bittering hop. There is sweet campfire smoke in the background and the finish is strongly smoky. Very well carbonated. Yum.

6.2%ABV. Smoked ale. Tapped out black-brown. 38SRM. Nose has rich smoked grain aroma, smells like barley boiling over a wood fire. Predictable aromas of chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is beery and full bodied. Palate of black bread, wheat toast. There is also a sour fruitiness in the middle of the palate. Light charcoal and burnt straw. Finish is burnt straw with some light beery sweetness.
