Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isnt as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (its true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the towns brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). Weve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isnt limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isnt as crazy as it sounds.

A very deep black with a small lasting tan head. Nose is a malty chocolate with a smokey edge to it. The smoke is more evident in the mouth, and then into the finish, harmonising with some roasty notes. Not overly carbonated with a smooth texture, and a medium body. Lovely finish with the smoke moving to roast to bitter. The smoke definitely isnt overpowering as per the bottle description, however Id like to see a bit more of it. Solid porter with that extra touch. 500mL bottle

Disclosure: from the "cellar" 2011. Aroma is smoked malts, dark fruits, toffee and only sign of aging is a vinousy note. It pours a deep dark brown with absolutely no head. it shows opaque against the light. body is medium to light, and its texture is creamy. sadly carbonation is minimal to none... no astringency to speak of. ignoring the flat feel, the taste is very decent. the smoked malts are there, slightly muted, the caramel, the toffee, hints of dark fruits and there is a spike of hop bitterness right in the middle that is very pleasant. finishes dry until some time after there is another spike of bitterness. - wish it hadnt lost its carbonation. other than that and the aroma mentioned above no other signs of negative aging were present. will have to pull out another to see...

Creamy beige head left a good cover on a near black still body - Looks great. Dark fruits, plum & slightly smoky but not overpowering. Smooth to fore, reasonably full mouth feel & prickly on them back - slightly cloying. Plum, berries, brown sugar, malts & a bitter tang on the back. This has a general smokiness to it but nothing overwhelming

0.5 l bottle from Firma Bier, best before March 2016. Clear, very dark reddish brown to black with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish, slightly roasty-malty and rather smoky aroma of dark chocolate, smoked ham and a bit of ash. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty and quite smoky taste of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, lots of smoked ham and hints of dark ripe fruits, followed by a medium long, moderately roasty-bitter, rather smoky finish. Medium body, slightly creamy and quite effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Nice one, not sure how old it is but it held up very well! Still very smoky, and I like that!

500 ml bottle from Hawthorne Cellars. Pours black with large light tan head that takes a long time to reduce. Smoke is big in the aroma and the roasted malt in the porter is difficult to detect. Flavours are more balanced, especially as the beer warms. Smoke is strong and upfront, as advertised, and the porter is robust. My bottle was very strongly fermented, which I like, but may turn others off. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: SEP 9, 2016 On tap at Vultures Lane. Aroma is just big smoky meat, and flavour is not far off. Theres a little caramel, a little BBQ, but mostly just smoke. Nice, but honestly its just another smoked beer.

This really is very good. Nice, thick, creamy head; lots of lace. Aroma is smoke, dark bread dough, malt, bit of fruit. Flavors similar to nose, plus hint of anise, caraway, carbonic tang, bittersweet\. Smoke is very balanced. Excellent body. Very easy drinking beer. Wish I had more.

500 ml. Pours deep mahogany with an ice cream float styled head. The aroma is still able to blast through with smoked bacon, brown sugar and some added smoked ham hock. Tastes of smoky ham hock with some earthy collards, molasses and a touch of vinegar. A bit of sterile gauze too, but its easily overlooked if you just want to be smoked. Medium body has a nice balance, but too much carbonation that flares up at times.
