The beer you hold in your hands is the result of years of practise and refinement. I have brewed it every year since I started homebrewing, and it was one of the first beers I ever brewed. In fact before the mere thought of 8 Wired was conceived. I always knew that one day I would brew this beer commercially. Every year the Sultan has been different, but it is always Belgian inspired, of course with a large dose of sultanas. This bottle contains the fifth version of the Sultan. I finally decided to base it on a Belgian style Quadrupel. The sultanas are more present than before, and it is brewed with a hefty dose of pilsner malt, Belgian specialty malts, dark candy sugar and a funky yeast strain. Experience and enjoy it now, or mature it for years to come. I cant personally guarantee it, but I bet that it will get better with time. Soren Eriksen Brewer

500 mL bottle. I was a little disappointed with this one, but perhaps it was my fault for not letting the beer age longer. It is a big, wet beer that tastes like a quad, but is lacking the complexity of some of its betters. For example, the alcohol is too well hidden; in a quad, I want to taste booze. There is nothing wrong with it, and maybe age would improve it.

Bottle (50cl) from Vinmonopolet (Vika), Oslo. Half-inch offwhite head that recedes to a stable thick ring with a small amount of lacing. Clear, dark reddish brown colour. Sweet, dark aroma of dried fruit (raisin/fig/prune), molasses, sweet sherry, soy sauce, Belgian ale yeast. Full body, small-scale lively carbonation. A fascinating tongue-wrapping, sticky/oily mouth sensation. Sweet taste, delicately balanced by mild herbal bitterness, discreet fruity acidity and hint of soy sauce saltiness. Long, bitter-sweet herbal aftertaste.

Poured into a goblet. 3.5 A: Mildly hazed (I think) deep amber mahogany. Just under one finger of frothy beige head. Retention is poor, but a short ring of lacing if left. 3.5 S: Superbly vinous. I didnt know they made them this vinous. Im overrun with grape flavored tobacco. Aside from the main attraction, theres a lot of raisins, dates and plums, lesser amounts of currants and prunes. Some vegetal component. Caramel, booze, molasses, and brandy. Aroma is intense for sure, but I cant decide whether I like it or hate it. Its not seemlessly integrated like a lot of the finer quads out there. 3.5 T: It tastes like it smells. Aggressive, wild, and unkept. Vinous grape and brandy. Earthy tobacco. Raisin, plum, prune, currants, and dates. Caramel and molasses. Its not necessary "unclean," but I wouldnt call it clean either. Lightly boozy. For the most part the alcohol is well in check. On the sweeter end for the style. 3.5 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good spritzy carbonation. Id prefer this to be a bit lighter, but its fine. Reasonbly smooth. 4.0 D: Gets better as you drink it, or maybe thats just the alcohol talking. This was $11, so I probably wont purchase it again, but it was worth a try. Pour is a muddy looking brown with a small white head. Aroma is big sugar with some dry dark fruit. Flavor is brown sugar with some figs and molasses. Very thick mouthfeel. This is a very dark fruit and dark sugar type of beer and it looks like that is what the brewer was going for. A decent sipper, and the alcohol is well hidden, that I found in the bargan bin

500ml bottle, seasonal release, 5th version, bought at Vinmonopolet Vika. Fawn-coloured head, close to clear. Fragile lacing. Dark apricot coloured body. Blended dark fruits to the nose. Prunes, plums, cherries and apricot in a rather heavy taste character. The joining touch of brown sugar makes it very sweet. Sharp ending of dried fruits and alcohol. Full bodied and suitable for slow sipping (hotel room, Oslo 25.05.2012).
