Strangely sweet and sour aroma in a cloudy straw gold pour. Laid back tart fruit taste to start with a sweeter middle and a woody finish. Was one of the highlights of a local (NZ) sour beer tasting session for sure.

First thing first… so what is a feijoa? After reading wiki, I’m still not really sure how to answer this correctly, other than that it is a fruit which is supposed to taste like pineapple, apple and mint. Anyway, this was a 500ml bottle with no clear bottled on or best by date other than that it was a 2013 version. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass. It was a hazy copper dark orange colour with pretty much no head and no lacing. Sounded like I was pouring a bottle of soda into the glass with all the fizzing sounds. Aromas were sour, fruity, grape, white wine, apple and wood. Taste was what you’d expect from the aroma. Sour, white grape, vinegar, wood, apple juice and hints of citrus. It was medium bodied with low carbonation (which was unexpected considering the soda like pour I heard). Overall at 9.5% ABV, the alcohol is well hidden. I still don’t really know what feijoa really is, but this sour ale is quite nice. The wine barrel aging also really comes through and adds nice woodiness, wine and grape flavours to the beer (unless it actually comes from the feijoa’s… lol…).

Draft. A golden beer with a white head. The aroma has notes of brettanomyces, fruit, and alcohol. The flavor is acidic with notes of brettanomyces, fruit, and alcohol, leading to a bitter finish.

Small to medium sized head. No lacing. Tobacco notes mixed with wintergreen and Brett. Taste is tartly sweet. Some notes of mint. Very good.

500 ml bottle shared with the group. Pours a hazy golden color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have big, tart fruits, tangy pineapple, guava, minty character almost like liquid Ben Gay, spritzy white wine, wood, some acidity, this is one interesting brew.

Hazed yellow, white head. Odd fruity flavors up front, juicy fruit gum, light sources, some funk, leather. Weird brew.

Draft at Brothers Beer. What is a feijoa??? Some kiwi thing I guess. Hazy golden color with minimal head. The aroma is acetic with apricot and plum notes. Pretty nice. Good tart flavor, if a bit acetic. Significant citrus and stone fruit notes. Medium bodied and biting from the vinegar with prickly carbonation. Enjoyable.
