3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
RBWG 2010- shared by goldtwins. Pours a medium amber and thin head. Fruity aroma, caramel toffee, sweet oxidation, sharp crystal, smoke, porky, meaty, soy with hairy dog and honey sweetness- a bit of funk and a bit off. Flavor is meaty, smoked ham, a touch woody, more earthy wet dog hair, sweet tea, earth, honey molasses and brown sugar- medicinal and bandaid as it warms unfortunately.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 mL bottle from Jovi in Gatineau. Bottled October ’09. (Love the warning: "May contain traces of smoked herring!") Almost clear amber orange in colour with a small, sticky, orange-beige head. Not your typical Barley Wine aroma - it smells malty, but it’s more one dimensional cereal malty, and there is no suggestion of malt or alcohol. Or smoke. The flavour is more interesting, however. The smoke is there, as is some significant alcohol. I’m probably just imagining the herring. The body is a little thin, though, for the style, and the malt is still pretty one dimensional. Still no hops. Maybe some age would help this one.

Shared during RBWG 2010. The pour is a pretty red. The aroma is big sweet and some meat. The flavor is similar but very plastic and medicinal. Oh boy.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle [341ml] shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- c/o HogTownHarry. Pours a clear copper-gold with a large fluffy white head. Aroma of grain (a grainy Barley Wine?), that Quebec yeast, some smoke, fruit and some sugary sweetness. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, light smoke, some spice and dark fruit. Average bodied. Disappointing but ultimately and O.K. beer.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: Poured a medium amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with very thin notes of salt. Taste is not as complex as I had hoped with some caramel malt and not much help. The smoke notes that was supposed to be present is very hard to distinguish and the salty notes are also very hard to find. Body is about average with good carbonation with no alcohol appearance. Not bad but not worth the price tag.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle... Beautiful, clear amber ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Great retention. The nose is an intoxicating blend of smoked bacon and sweet, buttery toffee. Full-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and biting carbonation. Sweet, smoky flavor with a brown sugar finish. What a treat… an English-style smoked barleywine. Thanks to MartinT for providing the bottle!
