COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Pours a hazy golden copper color with a medium long lasting white head. Lots of carbonation on the appearance. Strong smoky fish nose but not unpleasant. You also get some red wine, maple and some roasted malts. Oily mouthfeel, alcool well hidden but you fet a lingering alcool finish. You also get some sourness in the middle of the taste. Quite balanced actually.

Bottle from local IGA. Aroma: Smoked malt, caramel, barley, orange zest. App: hazy copper with small white head. Shy lacing. Taste and palate: medium to full body, medium sweetness, thick feel, light bitter, warming by alcohol and a tad salty finish. Overall: a quite different barley wine but quite interesting. Strong not too much.

Pretty pricey for a regular bottle but with more than twice the abv (11%)of a regular one too! Poured a very hazy dark amber colour, with not much head and ok lacing. Almost looks like mango juice. Very strong aromas, barley malts, caramel, dry fruits. Flavour is very strong, a bit of alcohol is apparent, dark roasted malts, bitterness with the spices, sugary sweetness. Really has a smokey mouthfeel, a faint burnt feeling. This is definitely a one shot deal. Pretty good, just a bit too expensive.

Bottle. This Abri a la Tempete Barleywine was a slow gusher that poured a dark copper with a thick fluffy beige head. It has a very bready sweet caramel & lemony aroma. Very full bodied with a silky mouthfeel. The taste really surprised me with a delicious soft smoked maple bacon flavor - extremely Québécois in terms of taste. A truly unique Barleywine.

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2016 This small brewery BW is a real revelation. It hits some balances that I love in a barleywine - roasted caramel malts, some booziness, understated rich tropical fruit and maybe apricots - augmented by some unusual elements - smokiness and some saltiness, reflecting the ocean environment in which it was brewed. Definitely one of my all-time BW favourites. It is a pity that L’Abri de la Tempete produces so little volume, making availability in central Canada a bit of an issue. The 2015 version might have backed off on some taste elements such as the caramel malt and the richness of the body.

Bottle. Label notched N 11 (so I’m guessing this was bottled in November 2011). Dark fruits, nutty, caramel, some earth, and some brown sugar. Alcohol content well hidden - I enjoy this (or could it be the atmosphere; drinking outside, in Old Montreal on vacation).
