À l’abri de la Tempête has drawn on the soil madelinot to concoct a beer with sweet floral accents. Delicately scented with a series of wild herbs gathered on the archipelago, La Belle Saison charm with its warm notes of citrus and flowers accompanied by a refreshing bitterness. A mouthful of sunshine!

341 ml bottle from Broue Ha Ha, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear bright golden with no head. Aroma: Fairly strong and assertive lemony ginger, earthy, very slightly funky, quite intense fruitiness and citrus, lots of earthy coriander, a touch of bitter herbs, a touch of esters?, a little dusty/musty, not bad for this brewery. Palate: Medium body, moderate effervescence. Flav.: Another big hit of citrus and slightly peppery ginger, biscuit, minerals, more watery than the nose suggests, still some decent earthy coriander, light herbal notes, hints of esters and funk (perhaps), drinkable; dry with modest bitterness and a fairly clean, lemon-biscuit finish.

These guys are hit and miss. This one wasn’t defective, but also wasn’t a great success.

Clear pale yellow color with a medium white head, Aroma of lemon, herbs and flowers. Flavor of lemon, herbs and flowers. The body is light with an oily texture and moderate carbonation.

Bottle. 341ml. Pours very clear, pale gold. "Almost" water-like. Not much head. Aroma is of flowers. Tastes flowers, hops. Crisp finish. Very drinkable and refreshing. "Clear" lack of complexity. Gives the impression of a cold chamomilla herbal tea. I do lie the flowers, but that’s really all that beer’s got.

Pours a weak clear yellow with no head and no lacing. Aroma is faint herbs and floral grains. Taste is crisp, clean, floral and herbal. But lacking that dry bitterness. A little too delicate for me.

Bouteille 341ml.

341 ml bottle bought at Peluso (Montreal) on May 26, 2011. Crystal blonde, thin head. Aroma of malted rye and herbs, very floral. Slightly salty and dry taste of herbs, not that malty at all, almost no bitter aftertaste. Not bad but I wish there was more taste to it!

341 ml bottle. Pours a slightly veiled straw with a nice white head. Smells like grains and orange. Taste is citrus (orange, mostly), some pear and a hint of herbs. Light herbal/floral bitterness. Some spices in there. Medium bodied, average carbonation. Good, simple beer. A bit pricey, though...

Sample at Chambly festival.
Appearance : Clear pale yellow. No lacing.
Aroma : Herbal and quite spicy. Lots of herbs. A bit like algae.
Taste : Herbal with algae. A bit fruity and grassy. Maybe a bit salty also. Finish rather dry.
Overall : A bit unilateral. Too much spices and herbs. Not my type of saison (and it’s not even classified as a saison here...)
