Blanche des Honnelles (1991) was originally very localised, and has since expanded beyond the boundries of the greater and lesser Honnelle rivers, from which it takes it's name. The Blanche des Honnelles leaves the beaten path somewhat. It has an amber colour which is after all the traditional appearance of the Blanches. It is also stronger (6%) than the Blanches that we know. Its taste is surprising and is not comparable to the brews with the same name that are now on the market. If the bouquet is subdued its first flavour is a stark dry sharpness against a pepper background. There is no acidity in this Blanche that is made with three cereals (barley, wheat, oats). It has a stimulating taste, leaving a subdued but refreshing final impression. Lots of character and curious.

Full disclosure, I’m drinking this on a Friday after a very hard week at work, so rubbing alcohol would rate pretty high right now. With that said, this is a really, really good beer, with a spicy, fruity, caramel/toffee flavor and a nice, dry finish. This is halfway between a white beer and a standard Belgian strong ale, and that’s a good thing.

Bottle @Bir&Fud Bottega (Rome). Dorata scarica, leggermente torbida, schiuma bianca media.

Bouteille 33cl, V&B Grenoble.

Bottle, Hazy orange color with white head. Aroma is spicy, peppery, orange peel, some esters. Taste is wheat, spicy-peppery yeasts, again some orange peel, a bit bready as well. Rather dry finish, fizzy carbonation. Quite heavy for a Wit (as advertised), but it really has character. Nice!

Originally rated on 12/13/08. A cloudy light copper colored body with plenty of yeast floaters. Big thick head, that leaves decent lace. Aroma and flavors started out with a little funkiness that left as it had some time to breathe. Also there were hits of orange, some banana, spice and malts. Overall it is bigger heavier wit, odd but enjoyable.

330 bottle at home in Richmond as ’Abbaye des Rocs Blanche des Honnelles’, 6%, 2001 vintage. Translucent orange, still with a fizzy head that dies to nothing immediately. Aroma is oxidised with apple and sherry, stewed rhubarb. Body is a little frothy with soft carbonation. Taste is wheaty, coriander, some white pepper, tangerine. At 15 years old, I was really expecting this to be a drain pour. But it’s a tasty, citrussy little number with some carbonation. Has held up really well. Surprisingly good and I drank the entire bottle no problem.

Hiilihappoja aika reilusti. Keskitäyteläinen suutuntuma. Oikein kiva ja raikas vehnäolutmainen kesäterassijuoma.
