Blanche des Honnelles (1991) was originally very localised, and has since expanded beyond the boundries of the greater and lesser Honnelle rivers, from which it takes it's name. The Blanche des Honnelles leaves the beaten path somewhat. It has an amber colour which is after all the traditional appearance of the Blanches. It is also stronger (6%) than the Blanches that we know. Its taste is surprising and is not comparable to the brews with the same name that are now on the market. If the bouquet is subdued its first flavour is a stark dry sharpness against a pepper background. There is no acidity in this Blanche that is made with three cereals (barley, wheat, oats). It has a stimulating taste, leaving a subdued but refreshing final impression. Lots of character and curious.

Full disclosure, I’m drinking this on a Friday after a very hard week at work, so rubbing alcohol would rate pretty high right now. With that said, this is a really, really good beer, with a spicy, fruity, caramel/toffee flavor and a nice, dry finish. This is halfway between a white beer and a standard Belgian strong ale, and that’s a good thing.

330ml bottle. Cloudy orange colour with a small white head. Aroma: spicy, pepper, wheat. Taste: spicy, peppery, yeast, wheat, bready malt, citrus/orange, banana, coriander. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel, average carbonation. Decent.

Light amber coloured, nearly perfectly transparent. Small, quickly fading white head, no lacing. Aroma is citric (orange, lemon) with some other fruity esters among a white bread base. Taste is medium to high sweet with low bitterness. White bread, citric notes and some pepperish spiciness. Overall not too vivid. Light to medium body with average carbonation (maybe too light per style?), overall going down easy. This definitely feels ’tired’, and may be lacking in carbonation. Possibly an unlucky bottle.

F: thin, off-white, quick diminishing. C: deep gold, hazy. A: wheat, spicy, light orange peels, peppery, grainy, flowery, yeasty. T: wheat, orange, spicy, yeast, coriander, bready, light body, medium carbonation, very unusual witbier, watery for me, good balanced but nothing very special, 33cl bottle from Carrefour market – St. Michel @ Etterbeek, Brussels.

Great intense sourish beer. Great floral, yeast, spices. Round and fresh. Great stuff.

Sample. Hazy light golden with a soapy head. Aroma of caramel, pine and citrus. Taste is sweet and slightly sour and somewhat spicy. Medium mouthfeel. By some distance the best wheatbeer i have tasted so far.

A bottle at the Cafe Bastille near Taipower Building. Aroma: sour citrus. Appearance: hazy, golden amber with 1-2mm. white lacing. Palate: medium-bodied and slick, medium carbonation, long, sweet and fruity finish. Taste: predominantly sweet, but well-balanced with a sour citrus element. Tasty.

Carbonatación a tope.
