COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A pale, strong, fruity, hoppy Trappist ale from one of Belgium’s six official abbey breweries. Achel 8° is hard to find even in Belgium; in the U.S. it’s up there with the rarest of beers. This blond, flavorful beer is a surprisingly refreshing brew at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining and refermenting in the bottle.

I’ve tried this beer a lot of times, I’ve even been to the Achel abbey, and still -I hadn’t rated it yet! Let’s make this up right now. 33 cl bottle served in La Trappe chalice. Pours hazy orang-ish golden. Thick, foamy, nice lacing, off-white head. Aroma is average intense, neither high nor low: scents of sweet orange, white flowers, banana, clove, candied sugar. Mouthfeel is fizzy, slick, round. Crisp, quite bitter, just a hint of sugary sweetness at the end. Finish brings some spearmint and citrus aromas. Medium to long-lasting. Quite nice.

koleminer20 (3469) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - APR 30, 2017
330 mL bottle shared by ebone1988. The pournis a darker golden orange with a thick white head that fades quickly, leaving a solid lace behind as it falls to a film. The aroma is interesting. There is a lot of sharp clove and a distinct Belgian maltiness and yeastiness. There is a fair bit of alcohol and a strong spice on the back end. The flavor is much of the same. The clove and spiciness are big up front with a light banana and a fruitiness and a strong alcohol. The finish is all spiciness and alcohol. The mouth feel is relatively clean and clear with a bright carbonation and a lingering spicy alcohol on the back that’s almost akin to a rye. This isn’t bad, but not that great.

Bottle shared with koleminer20. For the book. Aroma is fruity, floral, banana, tropical fruit, slightly boozy, sharp, grains, decent. Appearance is golden amber, off white head, somewhat hazy. Taste is spice, tropical fruit, banana, booze, slight malt, clove, eh. Mouthfeel is medium body, light crisp carbonation, clove and banana aftertaste. Overall, it’s ok.

thellgren (1030) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAR 25, 2017
0.33 l bottle from Alko Arkadia, Helsinki. Appearance is golden, clear, and with a big head. Taste is smooth. There is spicy ending without any spices. Spices balances the sweetness from the yeast quite nicely. Yum.

Aroma: Medium grainy, floral, rose. Medium-light spicy, pear. touch of caramel, Appearance: Slightly hazy, dark golden body. Medium, white head, fair retention. Flavour: Medium floral, pear, spicy, pepper. Medium-light bitterness. Dry finish with lingering pear, floral. Mouthfeel: Slight astringency. Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Light warming. Overall: The initial aroma makes a lot of promises, but the flavour lets you down. Hazy body and low head retention is not to style. A fair beer. 330 ml bottle, poured. 26C. Belgian Tripel

Grumpelmies (318) - North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - MAR 3, 2017
Bottle. Clear yellow with shades of orange. Good head. Aroma of orange peels. Taste is malty, bitter oranges and slightyl sour and sweet. Lemons, apples and belgian yeast. Finish shows alcoholic warmth. Strong carbonation. Kind of creamy. Makes me think of a Campari-Witbier-Cocktail...Lovely.

pleispleis (92) - Maccagno, ITALY - MAR 3, 2017
bottiglia 33 cl, schiuma fine chiara media persistenza, color oro velato, al naso malto spezie lieviti e banana, in bocca malto spezie e mela matura, carbonatazione decisa, corpo leggero, amaro moderato e ben bilanciato con l’alcool. Nonostante la gradazione si beve bene. Indiscutibilmente una Trappista
