A pale, strong, fruity, hoppy Trappist ale from one of Belgium’s six official abbey breweries. Achel 8° is hard to find even in Belgium; in the U.S. it’s up there with the rarest of beers. This blond, flavorful beer is a surprisingly refreshing brew at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining and refermenting in the bottle.

Lekker blond zwaarder bier. Droge afdronk, verder geen speciaal aroma of mondgevoel, wel een lekkere smaak

33cl 2016 vintage enjoyed as apéritif whilst toiling in the kitchen with homemade garnalenkroketten... - Dry, hop-forward and earthy Belgian blond ale with fitting yeast medium complexity, leafy continental hops (dried nettle, pepper, lemon rind) and a great dry pale malt biscuit base. Fruitiness is dialed down as a malt backbone: yellow apple, forest honey on cracker, orange marmelade. Rightly characterised as Belgian Strong Ale, not tripel as it refrains from the yeast-powered phenolics and esters, instead offering straight-up dried lemon rind, orange and honeyed cracker. Great appetiser for that, no slickness to the palate whatsoever. Among the more up-to-date dry trappist ales to discover for hoplovers this side of IPA (cf. Westvleteren 6, De Dolle Arabier, De la Senne Jambe-de-Bois).

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2016 I bought this bottle at Amstein. I drank it yesterday at Bonfol after a Basket-ball game. In my point of view, it is a delicious blond one and you observe that the ingredients are good quality, if I compare with a maredsous blond. The taste is well balanced, sweet, malty, some hop and there is a nice touch of honey at the final, dry notes at the beginning. The body is yellow and creamy, troubled, thin foam and refreshing for a beer at 8%. This one is better than the brown, I think so.

Robe blonde légèrement opaque avec mousse blanche persistante. Nez fruité. Goût légèrement métallique. Une bonne trappiste.

BB backlog, Hazy golden with small to medium head. Nose of orange, pear, and other fruity belgian esters. Flavor is dark fruit, belgian yeast, wood, and sweet malt. Medium to fuller body with the 8 percent being well hidden. Prefer other trapist beers but this is decent.

Bouteille 33cl, V&B Grenoble.

Bottle from Erzbierschof Zurich. A decent and well-balanced Belgian Strong. Has some hints of oxidation as it’s beyond date, but it still highly enjoyable. Sweetness gushes along the ceiling of the mouth as you swallow, with some light hints of acidity which glimmer through the soft carbonation. Rather light for this ABV, but not compromising in flavours. Nice.

Bottle in the living room.
The beer is blonde with a big fluffy white head & good lacing on the glass.

Aroma is bready & yeasty with some light leafy character & some light spiciness.

The flavor has a touch of honey up front but is drier in the finish. It’s got a great herbal bitterness. Just a touch spicy, fairly bready.

Pretty good.
