COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

Bottle at home, 27th December 16. Found this at the back of the collection, BBE July 2016. Pours copper coloured, a white head, good lacing. Aroma is molasses, dark fruit, liquor. Taste is caramel, molasses, fig, raisins soaked in booze, it’s sweet, but there is a bitterness to temper this. Nice to sip by the fire.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2016 0.75 l bottle from ’Belgiuminabox.com’, best before July 2016, so I guess about two and a half years old. Clear, very dark ruby to brown with a medium large, frothy, slightly creamy, stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity and a bit yeasty-spicy aroma of caramel, raisins, prunes, blackcurrant and a touch of clove. Rather sweet, malty, slightly fruity and a bit yeasty-spicy taste of caramel, candy sugar, raisins, prunes, blackcurrant and some cocoa as well as hints of coconut and clove, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, moderately yeasty-spicy, vinous and a bit warming-alcoholic finish. Medium body, rather effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Rich, satisfying and very tasty beer!

Grote fles gekocht bij de bron. Bruin bier, de kraag blijft lang als een laagje op het bier. Aroma: mout, caramel, rozijnen, zoetig. Smaak: beter als het bier opwarmt, kandij zoetig, licht caramel. Solide spul.

Beautiful dark brown pour with strong stable head. A: yeast, plum, faint chocolate, malts, buttermilk, more spicy than normal Achel. T: first sip is metallic and malts. Next sips are sweet but robust, sweet maltiness, nice dark fruit lacing, vanilla and light choco. Light spicy, faintly boozy development, with nutmeg note. Finish is quite bitter, but never too much. Robust, very nice.

Piana obfita, kremowo żółta, drobno i średnio pęcherzykowa, długo obecna w postaci mięsistej pierzynki. Barwa rubinowo miedziana, lekko opalizująca. Aromat przyjemny, sporo tu rodzynek, daktyli, karmelu, suszonych śliwek i gruszek oraz bliżej nieokreślonych ziół czy przypraw. W smaku jest fajna owocowo likierowa słodycz, ciemne dojrzałe winogrona, morele kandyzowane, figi, melasa, karmel, pikantne przyprawy... Lekka ziołowa goryczka i dość wysokie nagazowanie fajnie balansują wyklejającą i treściwą całość.
Niezwykle udany trunek, fajnie wyważony, intensywny i z precyzyjnie wkomponowanym, delikatnie rozgrzewającym dopiero na żołądku, alkoholem. Zasłużone top 10 quadów...

Night_Cap (119) - Southern Highlands, AUSTRALIA - AUG 20, 2016
UPDATED: AUG 21, 2016 Bottle 750ml. Served at cellar temperature. Pours a hazy burnt copper with a ruby tint. Head is beige, large, foamy and mostly lasting. Aroma has notes of red wine and woody/leafy hops; dark cherries, caramelized prunes, lightly toasted wholemeal bread, Belgian candy sugar, caramel, allspice and hints of aniseed balls (red). Flavour is extremely complex and slightly vinous; light herb-like bitterness, lightly toasted brown bread, dark plums (strong), blackcurrants, raspberry licorice, cooked brown sugar, allspice, a dash of ruby port and dried-leaf/wood notes in the finish. Full bodied with a slightly oily texture, medium carbonation and an incredibly long, complex finish. ABV is very well hidden. A truly SUPERB Belgian Quadruple!

Ulkonäöltään pitkälle Achel Bruinin oloinen. Onhan tämä vaan kaunis olut. Kaatuu omaan nimikkolasiinsa vaahdoten runsaasti alusta alkaen.
