COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

Murky brown with a thin, sudsy off-white head; a bit of sediment. Sweet, roasty aroma. Light mouth feel but a plesant moderately sweet beer; nice chocolatey roast tones and light fruit notes. Really excellent and note overdone in any area.

Bottle sample @ De Prins, Rhenoy tasting with Sussanne and Gijs. Clear dark brown with an off-white head. Caramel malt aroma with lots of dark fruits and some port. Very sweet taste with some faint hops. Cloyingly thick and sweet finish. Although very sweet still a great multi-layered mature quadrupel.

75cl bottle purchased @ Mille et une bières Cormontreuil. Belle robe cuivrée avec mousse beige. Attaque douce sur la figue séchée et la prune. Belle longueur avec l'alcool qui se fait sentir.

Slightly hazy brown color with beige head. Aroma has dark malt, brown sugar and some dark fruit esters. Taste starts sweet, sugary with some burnt caramel bitterness on the finish. Medium to light body with medium carbonation. Well balanced overall but the flavors are a bit muddled.

Very rich nose intense with almost tropical notes and lots of fruit. Dark brown with frothy head and deep colour. Taste is also fruity with hints of wine notes and some malts. Hops coming fresh lowering the viscosity in an agreeable way. Palate is rather long with refined hops and some dried figs.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2017 Niet beroerd maar ook niet zo goed als ik hoopte. Zacht, moutig, maar ook iets te zoet en te slap. Zeker geen slecht bier, maar voor een trappist iets te gewoontjes.

+ aroma + taste - label I taste this beer waiting for something else, but O was not disappointed. Not much sugar, enough alcohol and very nice taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma is surprisingly fresh for a quad with apples, alcoholic spiciness, dark fruit jam and some slight banana. Taste is sweet, but very drinkable and not too heavy. Licorice, sweet cherry jam, caramel. Medium to full bodied, this is a really nice quad. Very enjoyable.

Kulhuse 6/7 2017, 75 cl bottle from Den Belgiske Ølbutik. Shared with my Father in law. Very simple label in brown and white stating that this is an Extra Bruin with a healthy ABV. Pours hazy Maroon with very big brownish head. Settles as several centimeters thick dense layer of foam. Massive lacing. Aroma is rather sweet. Dark fermented fruit, quite sugary, solid odor of humid cellar. Soft carbonation and medium thick palate. Flavor is very sweet bordering on the sugary followed by light bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and a little boozy. Quite sweet but it feels not opressively heavy. A solid bruin who manages to feel light and pleasant.
