Adelardus abbey beer is the youngest descendant of our beers. This dark brown beer was made for the open house days of the abbey. Adelardus was one of the most important abbots for the abbey of Trudo and the city Sint-Truiden. He built the tower and rebuilded the existing church into one of the most monumental churches of that time. The ingredients are: brewing liqour, malt, yeast, hop, candy and sweet gale. Sweet gale is a mixture of ten spices from the region, which gives the beer his typical flavour. The alcohol content of this abbey beer is 7 % vol.alc.

The glass says "dubbel-tripel", and it is dark and powerful stuff. The foam is airy and dirty yellow. Smells sweetly of schwarzbier-like malts, which also have a strong presence in the taste. Furthermore there is a nice belgian fizziness and a raspberry-like fruitiness. A hint of soy appears further out in the taste, which is nice.

Bottle sample at a tasting at our place. Thanks Stas and Vova. Headless murky brown. Sweet, medicinal, syrupy aroma, sweet, a little fermented cherry and floral taste. Medium body, sweetish finish, low carbonation.

The dark abbey beer from this charming Limburg brewery, spiced with sweet gale, in rememberance of an ancient tradition, before the generalisation of hops. Light beige, mousse-like, regular, stable head, dark mahogany brown with a ruby hue; malty aroma with iron (perhaps a foam stabilising agent?) but also banana, raisins, yeast, black pepper, orange peel, gentle spice from the gale; malty and fruity taste in which the iron returns, as well as the subtle spicing, finish rather short, a bit monotonous in all.

11/IV/14 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk) @ home - BB: X/2014 (2014-362)

Clear deep red purple to red brown beer, big aery beige head, unstable, dissipates quickly, non adhesive. Aroma: soapy and floral, reminds me very much of St. Paul Double. Some citrus and coriander notes as well. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: wow, overload of floral flavours, like drinking a pot pourri, and no thats not a good thing. Lots of orange peel, pretty sweet and sugary, some caramel, but mainly just very very floral, reminding me of Turkish delight, which is also floral and very sugary sweet. Aftertaste: more of the same, very sweet, sugary, floral, pot pourri, Turkish delight. Did not finish. Cooked with it instead.
