Broadside was launched as a 6.3% bottled beer in 1972 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, just across the green from the brewery.
Ingredients: Pale, Black, and Chocolate malts; First Gold hops
Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit. The fullness of the beer makes it a good accompaniment for hearty food.

Pours a hazy, copper color. Decent tan head. Malty nose. Woody and very complex flavor. Buttery yeast notes are there, like in a Yorkie beer. Starts a bit sweet, but finishes dryer. The bitterness asserts itself at the end. It feels like a bigger beer than it is, which is great, since many porters and stouts are somewhat thin... this one’s thick and yummy. Nice brew.

Bottle from Asda, Sheerwater. Rich spiced fruit and malt aroma. Dark ruby brown. The off-white head starts of with a healthy froth but then recedes. The taste feflects the aroma. Malts and spiced berries. Gains bitterness with an underlying plummy sweetness. Medium bodied. Verging on sticky. Fizzy carbonation. Long finish. Decent enough but a tad too sweet for me.

Rich aftertaste with short taste of dark berries and Long staing bitterness. Not bad beer at all with rich palate of taste.

Bottle thanks to madmitch76. Dark fruit, caramel, esters, toastiness, spicy, watery a bit - somehow. Pours dark brown with low head.

a demanding yet rewarding ale that is easily one of my british favourites. much stronger and (IMO) tastier than the casked variety, broadside demands all of your attention and rewards you in spades if you give it. despite the darkness, and the density of the taste, it is quite fruity. treat it with respect!

AleMan84 (12) - Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 7, 2017
Aroma is hops, fruitcake, rasins, sweet, taste is not what I expected from the smell, smokey, burnt caramel with medium carbonation. Drinkable but not something Id buy again.

vami (523) - Poznan, POLAND - JUL 31, 2017
Dark fruits, dried dates, raisins, figs, dark amber color, clear. Taste is worse than aroma. Watery, caramelly, indistinct.

jvhemert (401) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JUL 26, 2017
UPDATED: JUL 26, 2017 Drinkable, but without much character. Dominated by malt aroma. Lacks a hoppines to balance with the malt. Some caramel notes.
