A refreshing beer of real flavour - distinctively hoppy and dry with malt aromas. Delicious served cool. Adnams brewery has stood in the heart of Southwold for over six hundred years and "Southwold Jack" appears on our beer labels. He continues to guard over our longest-serving beer brewed here in Southwold on the Suffolk coast -The Bitter. Bitter goes well with roast meats and fish cooked in batter as the clean bitterness cuts through the slightly fatty notes and hence keeps the palate refreshed. Our Bitter also makes a good aperitif. Available (pasteurised) in 500ml bottles and 500ml cans.

Clear medium amber pour with a 1 finger, soapy off white head that has decent retention and leaves some lacing. Aroma has lots of fruity ester, mostly tree fruit, and a little banana, planty, floral and citrus hops, caramel, bread crust, toast and light cereal. Flavor is again pretty fruity, nice toasty notes, biscuit, planty and floral hops, white raisin and some citrus toffee, and light mineral notes to teh finish. Light body, light, but somewhat sharp, blanketing carbonation, creamy to oily entry, slowly drying out to and off dry finish that has an odd, but pleasant lingering carbonation. Pretty good bitter, sweeter and stronger in flavor than one would expect from 4.1%ABV, even in an English Bitter. Would be a great fried food pairing, sessioner at a lower price point, I paid $3.99/500ml.

500ml bottle (Sip, Tallinn)
Malty aroma, a touch metallic, sweet. Ruddy, tight head. Sweet metallic malty taste, some foresty undergrowthy bitterness. Finish is metallic and bitter and harsh. Nutty finish. Woody, bitter. Rough. Narp.

rauchbier (3882) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - FEB 16, 2017
Bottle, from Morrisons. Chestnut red, thin short lived off white head and low condition. Low earthy maltiness with a hint of fruity berries in the nose, strangely mushroomy in the mouth with some fruitiness and a hint of bitternes. Finish is brief and slightly smokey with a little earthy bitterness.

500ml bottle. Clear dark amber color. Small size, beige head, stays. Caramel, metallic hops, malty in aroma. Grainy, spicy hops, caramel in taste. Crisp carbonation. Drinkable, but not great.

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2017 500ml bottle shared by Marduk, thanks! Clear copper beer, very small and quickly diminishing off-white head. Smells like a macro-bitter, fruits and malt, but with an industrial edge. Flavor is thinnish, some malt and some hops, some hay and some malty caramel. Ehhhhh.

VamboladeTolly (1937) - Tartu, ESTONIA - JAN 11, 2017
