A refreshing beer of real flavour - distinctively hoppy and dry with malt aromas. Delicious served cool. Adnams brewery has stood in the heart of Southwold for over six hundred years and "Southwold Jack" appears on our beer labels. He continues to guard over our longest-serving beer brewed here in Southwold on the Suffolk coast -The Bitter. Bitter goes well with roast meats and fish cooked in batter as the clean bitterness cuts through the slightly fatty notes and hence keeps the palate refreshed. Our Bitter also makes a good aperitif. Available (pasteurised) in 500ml bottles and 500ml cans.

Crushed with Jakebra
Pours a rich amber color with a small but fluffy off white head.

The aroma is fruity, toasty, and lightly sweet caramel malt with just a touch of earthy hop character.

The flavor is nicely balanced, only lightly sweet with a big leafy hop character and mild bitterness. The malt is very much the key player here with a light caramel, some fruitiness, and a mild toasty character.

Its really very typical of imported, bottled, bitter in the US... but more agreeable than they usually are.

ninecats (528) - Uddevalla, SWEDEN - MAY 2, 2014
Bottle. Pours deep amber, somewhat clear with two finger vanilla/yellow head, lots of lacings. Aroma is malty, caramel, bread and some floral hops. Taste is soft, malt, caramel, muscovado sugar, and a light lingering bitterness with hops. Medium body, soft carbo, oily texture. Well balanced and very true to the style.

ScipioA (405) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - APR 18, 2014
Looks great, deep burgundy body with a slight haze and a small tan head on top. Subdued bready aroma with some slightly dank hops. Pleasant honey and bread flavors are a little more interesting. The mouthfeel manages to be a bit too harsh with excessively dry finish, but at least the bitter lingering flavors are tasty. All-in-all decent example of the style, perhaps it loses something in the trip over the pond and sitting on the shelf.
