This Adriaen Brouwer, which is re-fermented in the bottle, is surprisingly complex. The nose of this Oudenaarde Brown beer features malt, caramel and dry fruit, with the merest hint of acidity. The finish is bitter-sweet, and the alcohol adds a warm glow. A balanced beer with a full mouth-feel. Could the painter and bon vivant Adriaen Brouwer have wished for anything more?

2013.01.01 - Adriaen Brouwer Dark Gold Ale. 11.2oz bottle in goblet. Pours deep red to brown. A full inch head settles to a mere 1cm foamy head with lacing. Aroma is sweet malt and mild pepper. Taste is sweet malt, a bit of a bite, carbonation on finish. Overall, slightly sweet. Not the best Belgian but good.

Bottle. Not bad, it’s getting some poor rating, but I enjoyed it. Definite notes of bread, dark fruits such as rasins and prune. Toffee sweet finish with honey, I do detect that meattalic taste that others are complaining about. For me, that is the only downside.

Dark brown in colour, malty, yeasty and only slight sourness, ok but not my favourite tipple

Backlog...late 2011/early 2012...bottle...pours deep amber/ruby with a thick and foamy tan head. Aroma is very fruity...candy sugar, fig, raisin, some candied fruits. Flavor is very sweet with candy sugar, plum, fig, and a touch of leather. Mouthfeel is full and sticky with an earthy/leathery dry finish thatcuts the sweetness.

Very sweet. Caramel , brown sugar. Some honey. Toffee malts. Nice a bit too sweet for my taste. High carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

An underrated belgian strong ale. Dark brown with huge head. Malty scent. Sweet but balanced, a bit of salty notes at the end (reminded me of Westvleteren 8 at this point). Delicious, and not too expensive, i’ll have more in the future, no doubt

Poured the beer from a large bottle into a trappist-style glass to drink. The appearance was a mostly-cloudy dirty brown color with a slight deep amber hue and an average-sized foamy and creamy off-white head with modest retention, good lacing, and light cling. Its aroma featured dark fruits, including raisins and prunes, and lighter floral and earthy notes, along with a touch of caramel. The taste had a slightly sweet earthy-floral effect with a touch of sour grain and some light caramel malt, but was under-developed overall. Its body had low-to-average carbonation and fizz with a somewhat flat and wet mouthfeel with low density.
