COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

beer_queue (43) - California, USA - NOV 4, 2016
Dark, rich, semi-opaque/cloudy brown with a medium white head. On the nose: immediately bacon jumps out followed by a strong scent of honey-glazed ham, smoky/toasty malts, and certainly some oak. Starts off slightly sweet & smoky and moves onto a savory flavor just like a bite of honey-glazed ham. The mid-palate also has some creamy malts and hops as well. The finish is where you get the oak smoke and a tiny bit of alcohol showing. The smoke & ham flavors faintly stay on your tongue even after a few minutes between sips. When it warms up, the aroma is sweeter...like brown sugar and dark fruits. There are some tosted nuts, sugary sweetness, and cacao flavors that stand out, too. It becomes generally sweeter and creamier as it warms up, holding back the savory and smoky parts for the finish. The complex flavors are maintained throughout the drinking session. Very full-bodied with a very dry finish. Medium carb; smooth & warming. Ultimately, this beer is uniquely savory; like other beers from Schlenkerla, this ones pretty much a BBQ in a glass. With that said, though, this beer is absolutely deliciousI enjoyed it more and more with each sip and could barely put it down to write my thoughts. If youve tried one of their rauchbier before, then expect the same savory, smoky goodness from this doppelbock.

500 ml bottle from Mile High Wine & Spirits fro $5.99. Reddish amber and clear appearance with a small tan head. Aroma of smoked malts, oak, light caramel, light nutty malts and light noble hops. Similar flavor, rich, moderately sweet and mildly bitter with a lingering smoked oak finish. Medium plus body with a smooth, creamy feel. A classic.

500 ml bottle from Woodmans in Janesville, WI, served at cellar temp in a Unibroue glass. Hazy copper, medium diminishing head, faint lacing, a bit of white cap remains throughout...typically wonderful strong smoky Schlenkerla nose, smoked meat and cheese, caramel malts; theres also a bit of a baked apple thing going on here...on the tongue its huge, massive malt character and to my taste a perfectly judged sweetness that doesnt ever become cloying, with a drying toasty-smoky attitude that comes in strongly and quickly, and yes, some actual hops noticeable right at the end, which is bitter and toasty in perfect proportion, with just a tiny hint of sharp, alcoholic apple cider trying to reach up throughout but remaining quite nearly out of sight and palate; extraordinary...on the palate, full and warming with well captured natural-feeling carbonation. This doesnt quite hit the heights of the Urbock for me (well, the Urbock of a decade ago; a re-visit is probably in order), but its still quite excellent in its own right and Im loathe to knock it much for small flaws when it remains a superb example of the style.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2016 Tap. Pours clear Amber, small beige head, decent lacing. Aroma is mega smoke, bonfire, forest fire. Flavor is heavy smoke, light sweet, medium bitter, malty toffee undertones. Medium body. Kinda harsh on the finish, bitter and a bit acidic.
Earlier Rating: 6/11/2012 Total Score: 3.8
Bottle. Pours clear amber with a small off-white head that disappears almost immediately with little lacing. Aroma is heavily smoky, almost meaty, like a BBQ oak smoker in operation. Smokiness gradually fades after pour, revealing roasted malts and a bit of alcohol. Taste is a bit less smoky than the nose, but still dominated by roasted malts and smoke, with a warming, mildly bitter finish. Nice beer, if a bit watery.

Final score is an average of these rates.

Notes of smoked ham, burnt bread, wood, and oil with some faint brown sugar. Nice carbonated mouthfeel. Fun to try but really hard to drink a significant quantity of.

Not all Aecht Schlenkerla beers are smokey, but this was is. You can smell it from a foot away. The base is a sweet doppelbock. not a heavy, syrupy one, but a moderate one that balances out the smoke. Goes down very easily.
