COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of roasted, nutty and caramel, moderate resin for the hops, light to moderate smoked gouda for the yeast, with smoke, brown sugar and bacon in the background. Head is small, fizzy, off-white with no lacing and is fully diminishing. Color is clear medium brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finish lightly to moderately sweet and faintly bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, slick in texture and has a soft carbonation. A thoroughly enjoyable beer. Easily one of the best Smoked beer Ive had.

The beer arrives with a hazed, amber color and is topped by a wispy, tan tinged head. This has a full on meaty, smoke character that is apparent from a distance. There is a phenolic character to the smoke here, it is definitely more spicy than the standard Beechwood Rauch malt. Touches of woody hints at barrels (am I just imagining this). There is a fruity, rich malt character in the aroma that is just barely noticeable, but really this is all about the oak smoke.

The beer tastes sweet, though there is not a lot of this, there is lots of smoke though and the middle has a richness to it, but this is not overly heavy in texture. There is a more smokiness in the finish, as well as a touch of drying, woodiness. The rich malt really showcases the richness of the smoke character. You can sense the strength of this beer, but the alcohol is not overly noticeable. This is quite smooth, it has a heft to the body, but it is not too heavy; rich, but not cloying, and it finishes quite clean.

The oak smoke is definitely dominant here, this is great if you are into that (and I am). Interestingly, the oak smoke is definitely a bit rougher than the standard beechwood character, and it is quite distinct.

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2013 Gravity at Machester Winter Beer Fest - Extremely smoky aroma... Like smoked sausage... Deep mahogany red to brown in colour... Flavor is like the aroma, very smoky in character but more subtle than you would expect from the aroma... Very tasty beer..

Appearance: deep amber like the inside of a freshly cut cedar tree. Orange pithy head fades into a thin collar of tight tiny bubbles. Swirls average.
Nose: oak and cedar gets in your face and never leaves. Umami savorance. Applewood smoke and applewood smoked bacon. Brief presence of toasted nuts in the middle. Apple cores. Spicy melted caramel in the back.
Palate: smoky, sweet, melted caramel, and nutty toffee in the back. Caramel brittle. Starts out sticky then finishes dry which induces thirst for more, thirst I am happy to oblige. Caramel coated applewood smoked bacon brittle delights. Orange oils. Charred oak in my breath. Honeycomb.
Final Thoughts: magnificence in a glass. Aecht Schlenkerla never disappoints. Never. Like sours and Bretty beers, smoked (Rauche) beers are an acquired taste but once you fall in love, you fall in love forever.

I know that I am Biased, I LOVE smoked Beer! Schlenkerla Urbock is one of my favorite all time beers, so i was excited to try this one. Pours a dark but translucent brown with a medium head. Lots of Wood, some meaty goodness and tons of smoke in the nose, I love the way these beers smell and this was no exception. Tasted of wood and smoke as well as bacon but not as intense as the smell. a slight sweetness marries with the smoke perfectly and goes beautifully with food (smoked German Sausage in this lucky mans case!) Smooth and rich on the palate but also light and fluffy as it does not leave any intense flavors in the mouth. Over all a great beer that I will have again but may not love as much as the Urbock.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber with a slick of off-white foam. Aroma is rich, layered smoke with light char, bacon, and some sweeter underlying malt peaking through. Taste is heavily smoked up front with char and ash before giving way to a very pleasant contrasting sweetness which is the richer malt and raisin from the doppelbock and even some hop bitterness on the finish. Even, creamy mouthfeel. A-grade smoked beer!

Pours a translucent, copper (light for the style) with visible carbonation and a frothy, white head that fades. Minimal lacing. Mesquite aroma, appropriate for a rauchbier. Full, creamy mouthfeel. UPDATED: DEC 29, 2013 Draught at Zly Casy, Prague.Amber beer with a lasting very nice offwhite head. Malty aroma, smoked, soot, sweet, toffee notes, maybe some vanilla, ash, raisins, brunt wood. Malty smoked flavor, roasted, bready, toffee, spicy notes, burnt wood, grapes, raisins, some ash. Hugely drinkable beer with a great body.

Pours dark amber with a small head. Nose shows smoked malt, but theres a distinct oaky character to it as opposed to the usual campfire and smoke ham. Underneath is sweet caramel. Similar oaky and smoky flavours along with more sweet malt, this time with syrupy and bready characters. Seems to be missing a little of the usual complexity. Body is a little undercarbonated. Not quite on par with the others from this brewery. Too sweet, and the oaky smoke and sweet malt seem a little discordant rather than complimentary as youd find in the urbock/marzen. Still really enjoyable though.
