While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

Bottle. Pours a clear orange amber color with a small off white head. The aroma has a big smoked component that shows smoked meats and charred oak, caramel, hints of peat and small dabs of honey. The flavor is smoked meats, charred oak, caramel, honey, light peat and a hint of spice. This is one of the better smoked beers Ive had.

12 oz draft at Swagger Waldo in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a hazed brown orange, with a smallish off white head. Nice lacing on the glass. The aroma is soft char campfire smoke, with smoked meats, toasted malt, and a bit of herbal honey sweetness. The taste is the malt sweetness of the Doppelbock initially, moving quickly to the smoky campfire meat, and finishes clean with the bready grassy malt. The palate is medium bodied, soft natural carbonation, the smoke and sweet finish the beer cleanly and nicely. Nice one.

The beer is a light orange hue and transparent. The head is a light khaki shade with a soapy consistency, fading to a thin layer clinging to the perimeter of the tulip. The aroma brings campfire, sausage, bacon, smoke. The flavor is peaty, smoky, but less wonderful than the standard trio I often drink from this brewery (Urbock, Weizen, Marzen). Grilled meat and a touch of sweet malt. My biggest complaint is the body, which is quite thin. The feel is smooth on the palate, with low carbonation. Overall, worth a try, but I wouldnt choose this over the standard rauch offerings from Aecht Schlenkerla. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 04-30-2012

Pours a gorgeous, clear, dark amber color with a two-finger off-white head that doesnt hang around too long. Some lacing left on the glass. The aroma of smoked ham, (whoa!) and toasted bread with a grainy earthiness to it. Smoky flavor up front, then the sweet caramel malts come forward. There is a nice earthy hop flavor and some dark fruity flavors that linger. A hint of alcohol in the finish. Definitely a dopplebock and the smoke flavor doesnt cover it up. Nice balance. Medium body and a nice low level of carbonation, smooth and silky. Overall a very drinkable beer at 8% ABV, and a very good and unique version of the style. The oak-smoked malt is definitely more subtle than their beech-smoked offerings. I have to say this is my favorite from Aecht Schlenkerla; I highly recommend this beer, even if you didnt like smoked beers youve tried before. I didnt.

Medium brown with cream head. Definite smoke aroma- smells like gouda. Smoky flavor, too plus toasty sweetness.

Another good smoke beer from this brewer. Not much of a head but the color is beautiful clear mahogany. Nice smoked flavor, aroma, and palate. Always find these unique and enjoyable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2015 Loved it! Deliciously smoky aroma that is not overwhelming at all, with smoked ham, honey, sweet caramel malts, oak, and a minor herbal hop noise. The taste is sweet, woody, and smoky, devolving into a drier finish. Theres a minor suggestion of alcohol, but its overwhelmed by the sweet malts and smoke. Medium mouthfeel with adequate carbonation and a smooth body. I found it more drinkable and engrossing than the Urbock.

50 cl. bottle split with Kraddel. @ room temp. Gusher, standard burned sugar amber, instant gone head. Smoken bacon nose, sticky caramel, caramelized, lovely smoked, light campfire and smoked wood. Sticky caramel, toffee, brown sugar, caramelized taste followed by wood, sticky smoked ham mixed with caramel, syrup, cough syrup. Sticky, oily, lower carb. Yummy.

Cant get enough of this fantastic smoked doppelbock. Pillowy head. Huge nose. The perfect taste of smoke and sweet deep malts. Rauchbier is an acquired taste for most. Once you acquire it youll feel like youre in a secret club. Schlenkerla makes rich and profound beers. They are among the best. I drink this beer in 500 mL usually three at a time. Its fantastic.
