the wonderful smokiness in the aroma and flavor is sweeter than the beechwood smoked schlenkerla beers (not sure if that is from the oak, or more malt, or less hops, or a combination). IMO, it’s not as hop-bitter as the marzen, or as malty as the urbock, and is a bit lighter on the palate than any of the others.
Magnificent, smoky with honey oak sweet taste, I would ascribe this to be maple-cured bacon on the list of Schlerkerla beers. MiP (15667) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - JAN 11, 2011
UPDATED: SEP 13, 2013 Bottle, 8.0%. Distinct smoke aroma, but not too much, also some malt. Clear brown colour, seems to have a little red. Tan head, semi-frothy and semi-stable. The flavour has a distinct smokiness and a rather sweet maltiness. The finish is drier and perhaps a bit more aggressively hopped than their Rachbier Märzen. Does not really taste 8%, but it is very good. rauchbierlover (648) - Berlin, Berlin, GERMANY - FEB 9, 2012
Wow! Thanks cesaro202 for sharing! Dark amber color with a minimal disappearing white head. Medium body, carbonation starts high, than slows. Slightly smoked aroma, caramel. Taste is sweet with a very pleasant smoked note which lasts on your tongue. Bittersweet Lorenasa (159) - Florida, USA - MAY 18, 2012
Pours a beautiful translucent mahogany with a small light colored head. Aroma of hunting lodge campfire. Tastes like it smells and no dissapointments.

Can’t get enough of this fantastic smoked doppelbock. Pillowy head. Huge nose. The perfect taste of smoke and sweet deep malts. Rauchbier is an acquired taste for most. Once you acquire it you’ll feel like you’re in a secret club. Schlenkerla makes rich and profound beers. They are among the best. I drink this beer in 500 mL usually three at a time. It’s fantastic. Picky me...adjust the temp and reduce the bottle carbonation (swirling technique) to get a perfect creamy mouth feel, the aroma is reminiscent of fresh lit cigar. The caramel color gets you prepared for a sweet mouthful, as smoky a beer as Lagavulin is peaty to Scotch. This was enjoyed with Jamaican Jerk seasoned thick cut pork chops and sweet potatoes at harvest season. fugitive (2005) - Athens, GREECE - MAR 8, 2014
Bottle. Color red orange with big head. Aroma malt, wood, smoke, oak. Taste malt, wood, smoke, oak. Great as always. DerNorweger (28) - NORWAY - MAY 10, 2014
Margarenia (11) - GREECE - JAN 12, 2016

Outstandind smoke beer. Really. If it was not a seaonal brew-only availble for December- I would drink that and nothing more all the year -when it needs a smoke beer, of course. And with a great dish.
Not as much smoky in the mouth as the classic Maerzen one but that’s why it get better. More complexity and an oily mouthfeel with a lovely, very long-lasting aftertaste of smoky sweet malt and bit bitter. Nice carbonation, right as it needs. Superb!
