“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Lovely lager, not as heavily smoked as their other beers, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

I’m not describing the beer since there are plenty of faithful descriptions here. I just want to say that in my opinion this is a great, original helles, refreshing and beautiful to look at (that head!). I routinely buy this from Schlenkerla ecommerce and it always comes in good conditions (never bought it in summer though - I live in Italy).

Bottle, 50 cl. Decent, overall quite smooth. The smokiness appears mostly in the finish.

Bottle->lager glass. Very slightly cloudy gold with big frothy white head. Aroma has slight smoke, some floral and earthy notes. Taste is moderately bitter and smoky malt, flora and earth, hint of citrus. Ok, though I prefer the bolder smoked beers from this brewer.

16.9oz bottle - nose is skunky straight out of the bottle, but in a good way. Other aromas include lemongrass, honey and feed grain. Sip adds strong wheat aromas and subtle smoke. Wife says inquisitively, "Is this smoke-y?" I get a lot of lemon zest in the finish to which my wife replied, "I get a lot of gross." A solid beer.

Spore nasycenie. Goryczka średnia, raczej krótka.
WYGLĄD: Barwa słomkowa, idealnie klarowne. Piana średniej wysokości, nietrwała.
OGÓLNIE: Całkiem smaczne piwo z legendarnego niemieckiego browaru. Choć powiedzmy sobie szczerze, że gdyby nie ta wędzonka byłby to kolejny nudny jasny lager.

Ar: Very faint smoke, with a ham/bacon hickory note; some light clean bread, with hints of herbal noble hops. Ap: Pale gold, crystal clear; large white head with great retention, cap of mousse with a trail of chunky lacing on the glass sides as the head slowly subsides. T: Lightly smoky, with a phenolic edge; smoke phenols combine with moderate bitterness and herbal hop flavor, lending a fairly lean, bitter edge; lightly doughy malt; very clean fermentation profile; no sweetness, cracker malt flavor throughout. P: Light body with medium-high carbonation; finish is dry. O: Fun take on a helles--with the smoke element; the smoke is just on the borderline of unbalancing the beer, given the phenolics, but it does stay in balance overall; the helles beer underneath is nice, quite clean and with a nice backbone of fresh pils malt.

Pleasant beer. Nice aroma - for me caramel/floral but mildly so. Golden, frothy, appearance. Pleasant but not a wow taste - medium sweetness, medium bitterness (i’d prefer a stronger malt taste) Good palate. medium body, creamy, lively. Very drinkable - I’d like to try it draft.

Clear golden, long lasting white head. Clean grainy aroma with smoky notes. Crisp, medium carbonation, clean grainy, malty taste with a bit of smoke. Great beer. And helles is not my favourite style.
